The Vikings, picked to win the conference in a preseason coaches poll, returned 18 starters and had rumbled through the first four games of the schedule with an unblemished record. The defending Skyline champion Knights, also coming in at 4-0 and ranked eighth in the state, managed only 64 yards rushing against a stingy Mazama defense and finished with 204 yards of total offense. Mazama’s Seth Morehouse scored three times and rushed for a game-high 134 yards on 31 carries, while teammate Ryan McGraw needed just 12 attempts for 102 yards on the ground. Morehouse, a 200-pound senior fullback, opened the scoring with a 5-yard jaunt before Geoff Phelps’ 20-yard touchdown catch from Allen Beck brought the Knights to within 7-6 after a failed extra point. North Valley narrowed the gap to 19-12 with a fourth-quarter touchdown run from Ariah Nead after Mazama had rattled off 12 unanswered points. But McGraw sealed the win with his lone touchdown — a 10-yard scamper late in the contest. The Vikings totaled only 18 yards through the air but accumulated 264 on the ground to improve to 5-0 overall and a Skyline-best 3-0. Quarterback Tim Cunha managed 110 yards passing on 10-of-17 as North Valley fell to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in conference play. Miners in non-conference play. A 5-yard pass from Brady Rhodes to Martin Gonzalez, who then pitched it to Max Boots, resulted in a 55-yard touchdown for the Pirates with 2:32 left in the game. Rhodes then hooked up with Gonzalez for the two-point conversion. Phoenix (3-2 overall, 2-1 Skyline) scored first on the game’s opening drive of 74 yards in 12 plays, capped by a 6-yard run from Jimi Lockheed. After nearly three quarters of scoreless action, the Miners (1-4) took a 7-6 lead with 5:20 left to play on a fourth down run of 11 yards by quarterback Ryan McDonald. Rhodes was 3-of-12 for 68 yards passing. Boots led all Pirate ball carriers with 49 yards on six tries. In the second quarter, the Mustangs put their passing attack into play with Davis hitting senior wide receiver Brian Evans on scores of 74 and 82 yards, respectively. Evans scored again at the 4:16 mark of the third quarter on a 15-yard pass from Davis. David Telle scored Henley’s only touchdown on a 35-yard run with 2:09 left in the third quarter. Evans finished with six catches for 250 yards. Davis completed 11 passes on 12 attempts for 287 yards. Trevor Schmidt had 18 carries for 98 yards for the Mustangs.
