Phoenix swim team comes up short against Cottage Grove COTTAGE GROVE - The Phoenix boys swimming team gave Cottage Grove a run for its money but fell just short in Thursday night's dual meet. With a potential victory in the making, the Pirates suffered a setback in the second-to-last event and couldn't recover as Cottage Grove posted a narrow 85-82 victory. In girls action, Cottage Grove held a 102-66 advantage. Phoenix managed a slight lead at 69-68 with only the 100-meter breaststroke and 400 freestyle relay uncontested. That score quickly turned the Lions' way after Cottage Grove swept the top three spots to take an 81-72 lead into the final relay. "That hurt us," Phoenix coach Jim Heath said of the 100 breaststroke. "Our boys had a lot of drive coming back in the last relay, but it wasn't quite enough." The Pirates' 400 freestyle relay team of Justin Heath, Dino Rossi, Jake Nelson and Tony Byrd finished first, but Cottage Grove slipped in for second ahead of Phoenix's second entry of Jason Reno, Scott Gibson, Keith Gibson and Jeff Stone. Phoenix had to make some adjustments on the night with the Cottage Grove pool distance at 33� yards. Justin Heath took first in the 200 and 500 freestyle events, while K.C. Cloyd placed first in the 133-meter individual medley and Tony Byrd was first in the 66 freestyle. Danielle Tobin paced the Pirate girls with their lone individual victory in the 500 freestyle in a time of 7:38.86. The Phoenix girls 266-meter freestyle relay team of Maggie Morefield, Brenna Moran, Amanda Clouse and Kimbra Chizek also finished in first place.
