With about 500 ballots remaining to be counted, Buckley led by 228 votes, 3,600 to 3,372. As of 11:30 p.m., Buckley had received 51.5 percent of the vote to Uherbelau’s 48.3 percent. There were a handful of write-in votes. Buckley acknowledged it was probably difficult for many voters to make up their minds in this race. "We both used every possible avenue of reaching the voters," he said. "We left no stone unturned." Advertisement Although Buckley said he had hoped for a bigger margin, he expected Uherbelau supporters will rally behind him this fall when he goes against Republican challenger Joanna Lofaso of Ashland. Lofaso was unopposed in the Republican primary. He said, "I had some people tell me tonight that they voted for her, but said, ‘I will be really pleased and happy to work with you.’" He said his challenge will be to reach out to independent voters and moderate Republicans. The narrow margin reflects the difficulty voters had in choosing between two progressive Democrats from Ashland. The two candidates differed on few issues. Uherbelau acknowledged it appeared she would lose the primary and said she will support Buckley in his race against Lofaso "While there are votes yet to be counted, the trend seems to indicate that Peter will be the Democratic candidate moving on to the general election," said Uherbelau in a statement sent by email. "I wish him the best of luck and hope that Southern Oregon will send a Democratic representative to the Legislature." Thanking her campaign volunteers, she said, "I will continue to be involved in the community and serve in any way I can." Becca Uherbelau, campaign manager for her mother, said, "On Judy’s behalf, we appreciate running against a candidate in what was a clean race." She attributed her mother’s loss in part to getting into the race two months later than Buckley. "He started early and worked hard," she said.
