Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend November 7, 2005 National Guardsman killed in I-5 accident By BILL KETTLER Mail Tribune A National Guard soldier died Sunday in an accident on Interstate 5 near Wolf Creek. The soldier’s name was being withheld late Sunday until family members in Portland had been notified, said Maj. Chet Cary of the 1st Battalion of the 186th Infantry of the Oregon Army National Guard. Cary said the soldier was a member of the support company of the 1/186 unit. Cary said the soldier was one of a group of 11 Guard members who traveled to Portland Saturday to pick up vehicles that had been used during the Guard’s relief mission in Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina. They were returning the vehicles to Medford Sunday when the accident occurred near milepost 73 (just north of Sunny Valley) in the southbound lanes of Interstate 5 Advertisement Cary said the drivers of two five-ton Army trucks apparently lost control of their rigs when they hit a patch of standing water on the freeway. "It was too warm for ice (on the highway)," Cary said. The first truck spun four times, rolled over and crashed into a roadside ditch. The driver was ejected from the vehicle. CPR was attempted, but the soldier who was driving was pronounced dead at the scene. The second truck spun three times and went into the roadside ditch, but it did not flip. Cary said each truck was driven by a single soldier during the trip. Nine other trucks in the group returned without incident. The soldier’s comrades took the accident hard, Cary said. "They’re not doing too good. We had the chaplain down talking to people." State police accident investigators were at the scene for several hours after the 4:39 p.m. wreck, said Oregon State Police Senior Trooper Joey Pollard. Traffic was funneled into a single lane while troopers completed their work. The fatal wreck was the worst among a batch of accidents on rain-slickened roads in Southern Oregon Sunday.
