The Black Tornado triumphed, 25-13, 25-21, 25-21. "We did not come out and play well at the beginning," said Crater coach Greg Dippel." The tempo picked up in the final games as Crater stayed within striking distance. Down 21-16, Arlisa Hoffman served five straight points for Crater to knot the score. But North slammed the door with freshman Erica Schultz serving the final three points. Schultz is one of two freshman starters who has been a pleasant surprise for Tornado coach Ron Beick. Joining Schultz in the starting rotation is Whitney Hodnett, who put up seven kills. Senior outside hitter Jessica Durham knocked out 12 kills for North Medford. Hodnett and Durham also combined for nine digs. "Crater did a real good job of staying with us," said Beick. "I thought we played one of our best games yet." The Comets were led by Amanda Penkala, Mariah McMillin and Kristen Tyska, who slowed the Black Tornado offense with four blocks each. Despite dropping to 0-4 in the SOC, Dippel was pleased with his team’s defensive effort. "We need to get them to believe in themselves, and they started to," he said of the Comets. "We just didn’t put enough pressure on them offensively to change the outcome of the match." GRANTS PASS 25-25-25, KLAMATH UNION 18-19-13 — At Grants Pass, the sweep gave Grants Pass its first Southern Oregon Conference win. The Cavers served up nine aces — three of them coming from Jamie Brinkerhoff to close out Game 3. Ashley Franko had 10 kills and two blocks and Kim Gonzales had seven kills. Allie Farmer led Grants Pass with 10 digs and Franko added six. ROSEBURG 25-25-25, EAGLE POINT 11-18-14 — At Roseburg, Roseburg got 13 aces from seniors Brittany Belshe and Corynn Jorgensen and junior Emily Waldron to improve to 3-0 in the SOC. Belshe led all players with 11 kills and added six digs. Waldron had a game-high 10 digs, while senior setter Shannon Miller had 17 assists. Jill Shaw led Eagle Point (1-2) with seven kills, and Annie Mannenbach had seven digs.
