ALBANY Blaze destroys high school cafeteria Comment By The Associated Press MailTribune.com By The Associated Press Posted Apr. 1, 2015 at 6:46 PM By The Associated Press Posted Apr. 1, 2015 at 6:46 PM » Social News ALBANY — A large fire broke out at a high school in this Willamette Valley city, destroying a building that housed the cafeteria and choir and band rooms early Wednesday before students arrived for class. There were no immediate reports of injuries at South Albany High School, where the roof of the building collapsed about 5:30 a.m., two hours after the blaze was reported, Albany Fire Department spokeswoman Wanda Omdahl told Portland TV station KOIN. The destruction included instruments, uniforms and robes. There was no immediate clues about what caused the fire at the school, which is one of two in Albany, a city of 51,000 about 25 miles south of Salem, Omdahl said. The school has 11 separate buildings, which limited damage. As many as 70 firefighters from agencies around the region were attacking the blaze, staying outside the structure and making sure the flames didn't spread, Omdahl said. School was canceled Wednesday, and the fire disrupted lunch plans elsewhere because the cafeteria prepares meals for other schools in the district. District administrators encouraged parents to pack lunches and said other lunchrooms would step in to prepare meals for elementary school students. Police also are investigating a report that two propane tanks on a travel trailer about two blocks from the school exploded about the same time the fire broke out. Omdahl told The Oregonian newspaper that the blast did not appear to be related to the school fire.
