The host Panthers kept it close with Ashland, only to lose their fourth straight Southern Oregon Conference contest, 50-49. South’s previous three losses were also competitive against upper-echelon SOC teams. "I thought we played very well," said South coach Andrea Jaime. "We dug ourselves a hole early, and if we hadn’t done that, then maybe we could have done a little more." The Panthers (5-14, 3-7 SOC) trailed 44-36 heading into the final period before making a run to take the lead for the first time, 46-44, with about three minutes to play. Advertisement Ashland (16-4, 7-3 SOC) went then went on a 6-0 run to take control. South’s Casey Martin nailed a 3-pointer at the buzzer. "Whenever you play South, you gotta play the full 32 minutes," said Ashland coach Steve Humann. "We lost concentration a bit on defense late, although we did stop them at critical times. "It’s a good win for us. We need that to stay in the hunt for the (SOC) championship." Grizzly Abeni Hill led all scorers with 13 points, while Hilary Huyett added 11 and Alysse Carlson 10. Marissa Towry returned to the South lineup after a three-game hiatus with an ankle injury. She had nine points and six boards. Katie Singler led the Panthers with 12 points and five assists, while Brittany Farrer grabbed 12 rebounds to go with nine points. NORTH MEDFORD 63, KLAMATH UNION 38 — North Medford’s press forced 29 turnovers and helped the Black Tornado (16-4, 9-1 SOC) take command of the game with a dynamic transition attack. North charged to a 16-5 first-quarter lead and built the advantage to 42-21 by haltime. North Medford junior posts Michelle Westermann and Mellisa Eastwold were effective inside. The pair combined for 22 points, 13 rebounds and eight steals. North won the battle of the boards, 39-26. Black Tornado sophomore Samantha Heim came off the bench to grab a team-high nine rebounds. North junior point guard Kailey Bostwick added nine points and five assists. Conference scoring leader Jenni Ritter tossed in a game-high 22 points for Klamath Union (8-12, 0-10 SOC).
