Before moving to Ashland, O'Meara spent 13 years in Detroit, Mich., with the Wayne State University Police Department, rising to the rank of lieutenant before being hired by the Ashland Police Department in 2010 as a sergeant. He was promoted to deputy chief a little over a year ago and has been overseeing the department's support services since former Deputy Chief Corey Falls' election as Jackson County sheriff.  "I'm honored to be chosen as interim chief and hopefully I can serve in a longer capacity than that," O'Meara told the council. Holderness has served as chief since March 2007, joining the department after 25 years with the Fontana, Calif., police department. His term as chief was marked by several high-profile cases, including the still-unsolved killing of 23-year-old David Grubbs, whose body was found on the Central Ashland Bike Path Nov. 19, 2011. He also oversaw the implementation of the department's You Have Options program, which gives victims of sexual assaults a variety of options for filing reports, ranging from providing information only to pursuing a full criminal investigation. Detective Carrie Hull Tuesday accepted the Professional Impact Award from End Violence Against Women International for her role in starting the program. City administrator Dave Kanner said the city has received 42 applications for the position from as far away as Florida, and that a few looked particularly promising. He said the city is looking to start interviewing candidates in June. "I'd prefer not to comment on any particular candidate," he said.
