Mail Tribune 100, March 29, 1917 Wednesday Mar 29, 2017 at 12:01 AM March 29, 1917 WOMEN ENLIST AS RECRUITS FOR NAVAL RESERVE The north and south sides of Main street between Front and Central are vying with each other in the securing of recruits. On the south side is located the headquarters of the Seventh company, C. A. C. Across is the navy side of the street with blue jackets and officers gathering in members for the navy and for the naval reserve corps. Five new members have been secured for Company 7: Carl Ringer, Code Hall, Clark Walker, Robert Wilson and Verne White. A party of Seventh company men under command of Sergeant Ted Hill, and accompanied by a number of army veterans this afternoon invaded Phoenix and Talent in search of recruits. Tomorrow Central Point will be invaded in similar fashion. Four new members have been added to the naval reserve corps: Arthur Perry, yeoman; Carl Swainson, printer, first class; J. G. Van Horn, storekeeper; Edmund Burke, pay clerk. Men are not now the only ones eligible for enlistment. Orders were received by the recruiting officers of the naval reserve this morning instructing them to recruit women for service as clerks, stenographers, and telegraphers. Already a number have made inquiries and by night several enlistments are expected. The naval reserve campaign in Medford will be closed tonight, the officers moving to Grants Pass, where they will be stationed for several days. LOCAL AND PERSONAL In deference to the patriotic rally Saturday evening, Dr. Bates of the University of Oregon will deliver his lecture on "The Devil in Modern Drama" at 4 o'clock in the afternoon. The drama league committee in charge telegraphed to Eugene yesterday and perfected the rearrangement. The Utah-Idaho Sugar Co. is offering prizes to boys and girls for the best half acre or larger tract of beets as follows: First, $15; second, $10; third, $5.
