Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend September 6, 2005 Poppa races to victory in Lon Skinner Memorial WHITE CITY — Medford’s Brian Poppa held off persistent challenges from Brad Alfrey and Dennis Silva to claim the 10th annual Lon Skinner Memorial modified race at the Southern Oregon Speedway on Saturday night. Poppa collected $3,000 for his efforts. Alfrey led the 50-lap race at the midway point, but Poppa shot past him on the restart and relinquished the lead only once the rest of the way. The two front-runners ran side by side most of the race, with modified points leader Mark Wauge close behind. Alfrey wound up in second place, followed by Wauge in third, Jesse Williamson in fourth and Dennis Silva in fifth. Central Point’s Jon DeBenedetti, who won two major modified races earlier this summer, briefly led the race but his car lost power on the 21st lap and he was unable to continue. Silva won Friday’s 25-lap feature event and took home the $500 winner’s purse. Starting in the No. 5 position, Silva took over first place from Yreka’s Travis Peery on the 19th lap. Peery lost power a short time later and had to go to the pits. Advertisement Justin Holt took second in the qualifying event. A surprise performer was Chris Charlton, a pro stock driver who was piloting Scott Weldon’s modified car. Charlton won his heat race, the trophy dash and finished third in the Friday feature race. Alfrey was fourth and Californian Ryan McDaniel fifth. Meanwhile, Frank Word III continued his torrid pace in the pro stock division, claiming his seventh victory of the season on Friday. Poppa, driving his father’s car, had led for the first 20 laps only to lose power and drop back to fifth.
