City cuts weeds on streets Who is responsible for maintenance and weed removal from curbs to property lines? Some areas look bad from season to season. Businesses and homeowners seem to ignore this eyesore. -- Judy V., Talent The city is responsible for maintenance in the street right-of-way. Talent Public Works Director Tim Dedrick admits the city is a little behind in weed-cutting from the summer. He's actually hiring two temporary workers this week to begin to catch up. "It's definitely not forgotten," said Dedrick. That said, some situations complicate the issue in towns like Talent that don't have many sidewalks. While the city's property may extend 30 feet from the center line, many homeowners have landscaped into that area. Dedrick says he's not comfortable cutting weeds when the area looks like someone's yard. The city's first priority is to mow tall grass that is a fire hazard, said Dedrick. Talent and many other cities require property owners to keep grasses shorter than 10 inches after June 1. Inside Talent, Fire District 5 is responsible for inspecting property and reporting violations to the city. The city then notifies property owners.
