Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend August 22, 2005 Woman killed in five-car I-5 pileup By SARAH LEMON Mail Tribune CENTRAL POINT — A multi-vehicle crash left one person dead late Saturday and southbound Interstate 5 traffic stalled for about a mile. The 10 p.m. crash involved at least five vehicles at I-5 milepost 38, said Roger Adams, battalion chief for Jackson County Fire District No. 3. Numerous emergency vehicles from District No. 3, Oregon State Police and Mercy Flights clogged the northbound freeway, forcing traffic in a single lane to a crawl. The female driver of a silver Mazda pickup was pronounced dead at the scene while the male driver of a black Honda sedan was taken to Providence Medford Medical Center with serious injuries, Adams said. The male driver of a Toyota Tacoma pickup that rolled on the freeway escaped without injury. "Most of the people walked away from this," Adams said. Witnesses said the crash, which had a domino effect, started with a Cadillac that collided with the Mazda, which then crashed into the freeway’s concrete center divider. Some bystanders said the Mazda’s driver was already out of her vehicle when she was struck by another car. Rescue crews found her body near the freeway’s yellow center line, Adams said. Advertisement State Police released none of the crash victims’ names late Saturday as they continued to investigate the wreck. State Police dispatchers were reporting the crash late Saturday as a hit and run and listed several possible vehicles that troopers were still looking for. "It happened so fast, and in the dark, that nobody knows what happened," said Rick Baker, a truck driver from San Jose, Calif. Baker’s big rig was parked directly behind the broken vehicles to shed light on the crash scene. The southbound freeway between the Gold Hill and Blackwell Road interchanges remained closed late Saturday with an estimated delay of two hours or more, according to reports from the Oregon Department of Transportation.
