HOBSON SPEECH WINS PRAISE FROM LARGE AUDIENCE The temperance rally at the Page theater last Sunday was the largest attended of any meeting of its kind ever held in Medford. The main floor and the gallery were packed to their full capacity, and many left, not being able to find a seat. The first speaker was Dr. Edwin I. Stearns of New York, the national secretary of the Anti-Saloon League of America. He set forth the rapid gains of the prohibition movement, but also said that he could not be satisfied until the entire nation had outlawed the liquor traffic. Even then, he said, he will not be content until we have worldwide prohibition. To accomplish the work which is mapped out for the forces and listed in the interest of humanity, he stated, required giving generously of service and money and that not once and many times, but the giving must be done continuously. His address was full of humorous anecdotes and the great audience was not only instructed, but entertained as well. The generous offering was taken and subscriptions were made to the continuous support of the work. The great address of the meeting was made by Hon. Richmond P. Hobson, who is of national fame because of his work in the United States Navy and in the Congress. Mr. Hobson has always been enlisted in the betterment of humanity, whether he served his people in military or in civic life. Because of his stand for temperance in the Congress he was defeated for the Senate in Georgia. Mr. Hobson spoke from the scientific standpoint, showing how drink impaired the physical, mental and spiritual development of man. The line of man's evolutionary development was broken and destroyed by intoxicating drinks. Drink, he stated, has been like a millstone about the neck of the race, holding people down and back from true and noble destiny.
