Perry Ellis had 17 points and nine rebounds to help No. 11 Kansas beat No. 20 Michigan State 61-56 Sunday in the championship game of the Orlando Classic. “To me winning the tournament is OK,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “But beating a quality team is more important to me.” Svi Mykhailiuk added 11 points and Frank Mason III chipped in 10 points, 10 rebounds and five assists for Kansas (5-1). Michigan State (5-2) got 14 points from both Denzel Valentine and Travis Trice, and eight points and nine rebounds from Branden Dawson. “They found a way to win, give them credit,” Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said. “We found a way to lose, give us blame.” Trice’s 3 made it 59-56 with 1:36 to play. After both teams failed to score on their next possession, Jamari Traylor hit two free throws in the final minute. Kansas took its biggest lead at 54-46 on Cliff Alexander’s 3-point play with 7 1-2 minutes left. The Spartans struggled from the floor during the first 12 minutes of the second half, making just 4 of 22 shots (18.2 percent). Kansas was 6 for 17 (35.3) over the same stretch. Ellis scored on a spin move, Mason made two free throws and Landen Lucas had a layup to put Kansas ahead 45-38 with 14 minutes to play. “I think this is big,” Ellis said. “It’s great for us, we came down here and get better as a team. It’s a big momentum boost for us.” After Michigan State pulled within three, Lucas’ rebound basket made it 47-42 three minutes later. The Spartans ended shooting just 32.2 percent (19 for 59). “We just didn’t execute very well,” Izzo said. NO. 1 KENTUCKY 58, PROVIDENCE 38: At Lexington, Ky., Kentucky post players Willie Cauley-Stein and Karl-Anthony Towns each had 11 points and six rebounds, and the top-ranked Wildcats opened the second half with an 18-7 run to pull away. Aaron and Andrew Harrison, Alex Poythress, Tyler Ulis and Dakari Johnson each added six points in a balanced effort by Kentucky (7-0). Carson Desrosiers and Tyler Harris each had 10 points for the Friars (6-1). NO. 4 DUKE 93, ARMY 73: At Durham, N.C., Tyus Jones had 16 points and a season-high 10 assists, and Duke beat Army (5-1) to bring coach Mike Krzyzewski within 10 wins of 1,000. Fellow freshman Jahlil Okafor added 21 points, and Quinn Cook and Rasheed Sulaimon had 13 apiece for the Blue Devils (7-0). Duke tuned up for its game Wednesday at No. 2 Wisconsin by helping Krzyzewski defeat his alma mater and earn career victory No. 990. NO. 7 TEXAS 55, NO. 24 UCONN 54: At Storrs, Conn., Jonathan Holmes hit a 3-pointer from the left baseline with 2 seconds left to lift Texas. Holmes had 13 points and eight rebounds to lead the Longhorns (6-0), while Demarcus Holland and Javan Felix each added 10 points. Ryan Boatright had 24 points and seven rebounds for UConn (3-2). NO. 12 VILLANOVA 78, DELAWARE 47: At Philadelphia, Kris Jenkins scored 13 points and Villanova cruised past Delaware. Darrun Hilliard and Daniel Ochefu each scored 12 points for the Wildcats (6-0), who held the Blue Hens (0-5) to 31 percent shooting and forced them into 17 turnovers. NO. 25 ARKANSAS 94, IONA 77: At Fayetteville, Ark., Michael Qualls and Anthlon Bell each scored 20 points to lead Arkansas, which improved to 6-0 for the first time since the 1997-98 season. Qualls scored 10 points in a late 4-minute stretch to spark a 17-4 run that put the game away. A.J. English scored 19 of his 25 points in the first half for Iona (4-2).
