North Medford girls roll over South in tennis, 7-2 Despite missing five starting players because of various school activities, North Medford didn't have any trouble registering a 7-2 victory over South Medford in Southern Oregon Conference girls tennis at District Courts Saturday. The Black Tornado improved to 7-0 in SOC action. North received exceptionally strong play from its top four singles players, only losing a total of two games. "We knew we'd be strong in the first four singles," North Medford coach Dale Jensen said. "After that I knew the matches would be close." North clinched the dual with junior Vanessa Barrus' 7-6, 6-1 win over Shelly Allred in the No. 5 spot. "She (Barrus) came through for us really nice," said Jensen. North's No. 1 doubles team of Alicia Del Rosso and Rebekah Murphy beat Julia White-Hoppe and Marian Close, 7-6, 6-2. SINGLES -- Leslie Schultz, NM, d. Jen Templeton, 6-1, 6-1; Annie Chaney, NM, d. Boys Tennis South Medford senior Zach Matthews accounted for two of the Panthers' three wins, but North Medford still posted a 6-3 victory in Southern Oregon Conference boys tennis Saturday at Fichtner-Mainwaring Park. Matthews registered victories in No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles. North Medford captured wins in the other four singles matches to take command of the dual and improve to 4-1 in the SOC. Track and Field GLIDE INVITATIONAL -- At Glide, Megan Dode paced St. Mary's with two fourth-place efforts in the 36-team meet. Dode finished fourth in the 100 meters at 13.5 seconds and fourth in the 400 at 65.1. Leah Sawyer placed fourth for the Crusaders in the 1,500 at 5:25, edging teammate Martina Patella (5:26). Patella went on to finish fourth in the 3,000 at 11:56. St. Mary's finished eighth in the girls standings, with North Valley finishing second behind Oakland. Cascade Christian finished tied for 21st, with Illinois Valley in 25th. K'Pree Ford-Harris won the shot put at 35 feet, 8 inches and discus (111-8) to pace the North Valley girls team. North Valley's boys team placed third behind Oakridge and Reedsport, with Powers in seventh place and Cascade Christian in 12th. Illinois Valley finished 23rd. Jordan Ferrell of Cascade Christian placed third in the boys high jump (6-0). Boys Golf ROSEBURG WINS TOURNAMENT -- At Grants Pass Golf Club, Roseburg's Eric House shot a 2-over-par 74 Saturday to hold on for the individual title at the Southern Oregon Invitational. House recorded a 145 total over the two-day tournament and held off Thurston's Justin St. Clair, who fired a 1-under 71 but finished one stroke back at 146. Per Englund finished third with a 152 combined score for Ashland, while Geoff Davis placed fourth for Grants Pass at 153. The Grizzlies' Pete Kirkpatrick rounded out the top five, finishing at 155. Roseburg won the team title with a 621.
