Crater wrestlers third FRESNO, Calif . -- Crater High's wrestling team might not have done much for its national ranking when it took part in the Clovis West Shootout. But the Comets came away with seven wins in nine dual meets -- including two wins over ranked teams -- and finished third in the 18-team tournament. No. 6 Calvary Chapel of Costa Mesa, Calif., defeated the Comets -- ranked third nationally -- 34-25. Crater, Oregon's two-time defending state champion, defeated Kerman of Fresno, 72-3; Turlock, 55-9; Clovis West, 46-26; No. 32 Merced, 42-32; Monache of Porterville, 51-24; No. 9 Clovis, 47-23; and Exeter, 54-19. The Comets also lost to Buchanan of Fresno, 34-16. Crater 130-pounder Morgan Hawkins broke a bone in his hand in the first match and couldn't compete the rest of the way. Shane Webster (160) and Scott Toney (189) were named to the all-tournament team, while Tanner Hillyer (171), Anders Vetch (215) and heavyweight Austin Etcheson were all 8-1. "Rankings don't mean anything" Crater coach Greg Haga says. "You want to go where there's a lot of competition and where matches can go either way. That's what's important for later on." Webster defeated Steve Arciletta of Calvary Chapel, 11-3. Arciletta was third in the California state meet last winter. Crater is 8-2 overall in duals.
