Grants Pass stays perfect MILWAUKIE � Grants Pass might be a bit weary after playing its sixth game on the road in the past two weeks, but the Caveman didn�t let it affect its performance in the finals of the Clackamas-Putnam Invitational Friday. Undefeated Grants Pass (10-0) used an effective full-court zone press to take control from the opening tip and rolled to a 75-52 victory over host Rex Putnam in the championship game. Brandt Minor�s eight first-quarter points helped Grants Pass grab a 21-5 lead. "Our pressure got to them pretty early," Grants Pass coach Bill Cowell said. "And it was pretty much over after that." Senior post Ian Elseth, last season�s Southern Oregon Conference player of the year, scored 11 of his game-high 23 points in the second period as the Cavers built a commanding 41-23 halftime margin. "We spread it around really well," said Cowell. "We played unselfishly. Different guys at different points stood up and made shots." Fourth-ranked Grants Pass opens SOC play Tuesday at Klamath Union. DEL MAR 57, ASHLAND 48 � At Redding, Calif., undefeated Del Mar of Pleasanton, Calif., took advantage of a matchup advantage underneath in the final quarter to rally for the victory in the Pepsi Slam tournament at Foothills High. When Ashland big men Carter Kirkpatrick and Noah Shield were forced to the bench with their fourth fouls early in the final period, 240-pound post Steve White took over for Del Mar. White scored eight of his 13 points in the period as Del Mar (11-0) erased a 34-33 deficit entering the quarter. Ashland (5-4) was also without post Kyle Allred, who was in Hawaii. Lance Streng led Ashland with 13 points, while Shields and Kirkpatrick, who was selected to the all-tournament team, each added 11. Ashland outrebounded Del Mar, 36-31. CROOK COUNTY 69, HIDDEN VALLEY 64 � At Murphy, Ryan McCarthy made six 3-pointers and scored 32 points as the Cowboys advanced to the championship of the Southern Oregon Holiday Classic. McCarthy, who scored 31 points the night before against Illinois Valley, made all three of the Cowboys� field goals in the fourth quarter � all 3s. Hidden Valley (4-5), which got 14 points from Colin Carr, 11 from Troy Beard and 10 from Kevin Ries, led until the final two minutes. Ries� points came in the first 1� quarters. KLAMATH UNION 55, MAZAMA 36 � At Klamath Falls, the Pelicans used a balanced attack to subdue Mazama in the third-place game of the Klamath Basin Tournament. Nick Caleb had 11 points to pace KU (3-5), with Luis Garcia and Tyler Baker each adding eight and Jason Mortenson posting seven. The Pelicans, who beat Mazama 45-40 earlier this season, managed a 10-point lead at halftime and put the game away with an 18-7 edge in the final stanza. Lavell Hesia had 11 for Mazama.
