Crater romps past No. 1 Vikes FOREST GROVE -- Facing the state's No. 1-ranked Class 4A baseball team on the road didn't faze the Crater Comets in the least. Casey Campbell fired a two-hitter and Jeremiah Toews hit a two-run homer to boost the No. 6 Comets to a 7-1 state quartefinal victory over top-ranked Forest Grove. The Comets, now 25-3, will play host to Lakeridge, a 7-6 winner over Bend, Wednesday at Anhorn Field. The game is tentatively scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. "I honestly didn't think they were that good," Crater coach Chuck Dominiak said of Forest Grove, "but it's always exciting to beat the No. 1 team." Campbell was masterful in winning his 10th game against two losses. Relying heavily on his curveball, the 6-foot-3, 215-pound senior struck out nine and walked only two as he improved his record to 10-2. "They couldn't hit his curveball," Dominiak said. "And that made his fastball all the more effective. This was about as good as Casey has thrown all season." Campbell gave up an unearned run in the bottom of the third for a 1-0 Forest Grove lead, but Crater took command of the game in the top of the fourth. K.J. Chubb's RBI single following a double by Brent Foster accounted for the first run. Campbell then reached on an error, scoring Chubb, and Toews followed with his two-run homer that made it 4-1. The Comets added a run in the fifth when Kenny Strate singled and eventually scored on a double steal, and Chubb's RBI single ignited a two-run burst in the seventh. Chubb was the game's lone player with two hits. Foster, who has posted a 7-0 record this spring, will get the start on the mound Wednesday. NORTH MARION 5, PHOENIX 4 -- At North Marion, Adam Craft knocked in two runs to lead second-ranked North Marion past Phoenix in a state playoff quarterfinal. Travis Dunlap rallied the Pirates with a three-run homer in a four-run fifth inning, cutting the North Marion lead to 5-4. That was as close as they would get, however. Ty Brack had two RBIs while Jeremy Miller added another for North Marion, which advanced to the semifinals against fifth-ranked Philomath. The seventh-ranked Pirates ended the season with a 20-8 record. MAZAMA 19, SEASIDE 2 --At Seaside, Jake Nelson pitched four dominant innings and Skyline Conference champion Mazama cruised the rest of the way to crush Seaside. The victory moved the Vikings into a Class 3A semifinal game against Glide at Klamath Falls on Wednesday. CASCADE CHRISTIAN 10, SHERMAN COUNTY 7 -- At Moro, Blane Newfield went 4-for-4 to lead Cascade Christian past Sherman County in a Class 2A state quarterfinal game. The Challengers host Glendale, a 2-0 winner over Warrenton, on Wednesday. Aaron Beamish ran his record to 8-0 in five innings of work, giving up four hits. Softball REDMOND 4, NORTH MEDFORD 3 --At Redmond, Miranda Gillaspie's two-run double capped a four-run fifth inning for Redmond, and that was all the offense the Panthers needed to upset No. 4-ranked North Medford (22-7). Gillaspie, the winning pitcher, held the Black Tornado to four hits. "They made some outstanding plays in the field," said North Medford coach Larry Binney, who is retiring after 19 seasons with the Tornado. "We hit some balls that could have gotten through, but they made a couple of bigtime plays." One of them came in the seventh after North Medford had closed to within 4-3 with two runs in the sixth. Haley Varley hit a one-out double in the seventh and Heather Johnson sacrificed her to third. Sandy Horn then drilled a shot to deep right, but Redmond outfielder Marissa Carpenter made a leaping catch to end the game.
