Dr. William (Bill) Klenke Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Aug. 30, 2015 at 2:00 AM Posted Aug. 30, 2015 at 2:00 AM » Social News Dr. William (Bill) Klenke November 9, 1940 - June 19, 2015 Dr. William (Bill) Klenke passed peacefully from this life surrounded by his children June 19, 2015 in San Diego, CA from advanced ALS. He was 74 years old. Bill Klenke was born November 9th, 1940 the eldest of three children to Henry and Delores Klenke in Manitowoc, Wis. Upon completing high school he served four years in the U.S. Navy and then began to pursue his career as an educator, receiving his undergraduate degree from Carthage College. During his time as an undergraduate he married his first wife, Carol Deffke, and began a family with two daughters Lisa and Lora. Bill earned a masters degree from University of Wisconsin Milwaukee and completed his education in 1975 at the University of Wisconsin Madison with a P.H.D. in Educational Administration. While doing post graduate research at UW Madison, Bill met his second wife, Alison Kinsey, marrying in 1979. Bill then filled the position of principal at Ruch Elementary and moved to the Rogue Valley in 1980. Bill and Alison had two children together, Jonathan and Brian. In 1985 he became the principal of Roosevelt Elementary and served as the Medford School District Director of Elementary Education from 1992 until his retirement in 2002. Dr. Klenke loved working with children and was known to many throughout the school system for his professionalism, aptitude, kindness, intelligence and humor. After his retirement Bill enjoyed life to the fullest, riding horses and driving cattle in the mountains, lounging on the beaches of St. Martin, drinking Rouge Valley wine, traveling extensively and researching family history. Bill continued his public service in retirement by regularly volunteering with the Red Cross and playing an active role with the Ashland Elks Club. In 2012 Bill was diagnosed with ALS and moved to San Diego, Calif. to be closer to his children Lisa and Jonathan. Throughout his debilitating illness he kept a remarkably positive and inspiring attitude. He will be remembered for his warmth, intellect, uniqueness, good nature, love of life, and amazing polka dancing. He is survived by his children; Lisa Redwine, Lora Klenke, Jonathan Klenke, and Brian Klenke; as well as his siblings, Judy Klenke and Mike Klenke. A celebration of life was held in Madison, WI.
