The 14,500-square-foot building is scheduled to be complete next year. Mail Tribune / Roy Musitelli District 5 fire station on call for early 2004 A new fire station for Jackson County Fire District 5 now dominates the skyline north of Talent on South Pacific Highway. Construction on the $2.3 million, 14,500-square-foot building at 5811 S. Pacific Highway began in April and should be complete early next year. It will serve as the district’s headquarters. The district serves about 120 square miles of southern Jackson County, including Talent and rural areas around Ashland, Talent and Phoenix. Last year it responded to 1,400 calls for help. The new station will include men's and women's dormitories, administrative offices, training and conference rooms, public meeting hall and garage space for up to eight fire and rescue vehicles. It will replace a 3,500-square-foot station built decades ago at 716 S. Pacific Highway in Talent as a volunteer station, Marshall said. The district now has 21 professional firefighters and administrators and 35 volunteers. Advertisement The district, which will continue to operate another station south of Ashland at 40 Neil Creek Road, plans to sell the old Talent station. The 6.75-acre site provides enough space for training towers and burn rooms, to be built over the next 15 years, district officials have said. Adroit Construction Inc. of Ashland is the contractor for the station designed by Portland-based Peck Smiley Ettlin Architects. Peck Smiley Ettlin also designed the recently completed Ashland fire station and a station for Jackson County Fire District 3 in Eagle Point. The district paid for the new building with $2.5 million worth of bond-like instruments called certificates of participation, which will be repaid over 30 years from the district's regular tax revenue. Phoenix Fire Department has open house Phoenix Fire Department will have an open house Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. and Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the fire station, 116 W. Second St. On both days the event will feature displays of fire engines and other firefighting gear and quick seminars on safety topics such as using a fire extinguisher, checking a smoke detector, learning heart-attack and stroke signs, and installing child-safety seats, firefighter Bryan Dorris said. Firefighters will hand out free bike helmets for kids and have door prizes, from yo-yos to fire extinguishers, for all ages. Dorris said the open house is designed in part to help the community learn about the many duties of Phoenix’s small fire department, which relies on volunteers as well as paid firefighters.
