Davis sprints to 3 wins for SOU By RANDY HAMMERICKSEN ASHLAND -- Southern Oregon University sprinter Mat Davis powered his way to three wins Saturday in the Cascade Conference Track and Field Championships at Raider Stadium. Davis scored 22 points with his wins in the 200 meters, 400 and for his anchor lap of SOU's winning 1,600 relay team. Those points helped SOU run away with the men's team title with 164 points. The SOU women's team finished first in the five-team meet with 182 points. "It's a great way to go out, but I wish it wasn't over," said Davis, a senior who ran in his final home meet for the Raiders. He still has two meets remaining in his college career, but both are on the road (the Oregon Twilight Meet next Saturday in Eugene and the NAIA meet in three weeks at Abbotsford, B.C. Davis cruised to wins in the 400 (48.69) and 200 (21.81.) "The conditions weren't ideal (cool and windy) for the best times," said Davis, a former football and track standout at North Medford High. "I'm pretty happy with my times and winning three events. I had it in my head I was going to do that." Davis' winning time in the 400 was a Cascade Conference record, and his winning 1,600-meter relay team also broke the record with a time of 3:19.7. Former South Medford sprint star Eric McKenzie gave Southern Oregon a victory in the 100 in 11.09 seconds and Brian Kurland of the Raiders finished second to keep the points piling up. Davis wasn't the only multiple-event success story in the meet. Nels Hage of the Raiders won the discus with a throw of 149-6 and he took second in the hammer with a personal-best throw of 168-5. His SOU teammate, Bob Metcalf, won with a throw of 175-4. "I was rooting for Bob to win," said Hage. "It was his last home meet, and I wanted him to get a win. "My problem today was that I couldn't stay in the ring," said Hage. "I was close to some good marks, but I couldn't keep my feet in (the ring). I had one throw go around 178 feet, but I barely stepped out." SOU junior thrower Richard Bailey finished first in the shot put (50-2), second in the discus (145-11), and fourth in the hammer (149-10). The Raiders finished 1-2-3-4 (Metcalf, Hage, Justin Bennett and Bailey) in the hammer to stack up 28 points and 1-2-3 in the discus (Hage, Bailey and Metcalf) for 24 more. "We showed some great depth," said SOU coach Dale Fisher. "The men's team stepped up." In the women's meet, SOU's Nicole Irons set a school record in winning the pole vault at 10 feet, 10 inches. She broke her own previous school record of 10-8. "I was jumping real well in practice this week and I was hoping for a jump between 11-1 and 10-10," said Irons. "I'm happy I was able to do what I have been doing in practice." Nicole Robertson of Southern Oregon won the women's discus at 148-1, Rachel Childers of the Raiders finished second at 135-7 and Daisy Hoffert of SOU was third at 125-4. Fisher was named the men's and women's conference coach of the year following the meet. Heather Werth, a four-event winner (100, 200, long jump and triple jump) for Oregon Tech, was named women's athlete of the year. Jason Follett of Eastern Oregon was selected men's athlete of the year.
