James O. Mason Sunday Jun 9, 2002 at 2:00 AM Dec 17, 2010 at 2:42 PM A private family service is scheduled for James Ochiltree Mason. Mr. Mason, 79, of Ashland, died Thursday (June 6, 2002) at the Linda Vista Care Center, Ashland. He was born Sept. 27, 1922, in San Salvador, El Salvador, the son of Charles and Thirza Mason. His father was helping build a railroad through Central America. He was raised primarily in Argentina, but returned to Great Britain to complete his schooling. Absorbed with photography, he went to work for a local newspaper in Southampton as a news photographer when he was 14. On Nov. 17, 1945, in London, England, he married Sylvia Roberts, who survives. In World War II, he served as a major in the British 8th Army. He commanded a tank squadron until he was wounded, then transferred to an army film and photo unit. He met Life magazine photographer Bob Landry in Egypt. After the war, Landry persuaded Mr. Mason and his wife to emigrate to Los Angeles in 1948. Mr. Mason worked as a photographer and received an associateship from the Institute of British Photographers in 1956. He specialized in architectural photography. While Mr. Mason worked as a freelance photographer in Los Angeles, his architectural photographs attracted the attention of Ub Iwerks, director of special effects at Walt Disney Studios. That began a 30-year association with Disney. In that time, Mr. Mason worked on special effects on such Disney productions as Mary Poppins, (which won an Academy Award for special effects) Darby O'Gill and the Little People and The Black Cauldron. Mr. Mason retired in 1986. The Southern Oregon Film and Video Association presented him with the Lifetime Achievement Award in 1995. In addition to photography, Mr. Mason enjoyed repairing and collecting old cameras, often reproducing obsolete parts by hand. He is survived by his wife, of Ashland. Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Crematory, Ashland. Wanda Gayle Heath The graveside service for Wanda Gayle Heath will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Siskiyou Memorial Park. Pastor Lobraugh of New Life Church of God will officiate. Ms. Heath, 67, of Medford, died Thursday (June 6, 2002) at Sunrise Foster Care Home. She was born Aug. 22, 1934, in Crawford, Neb., to Mark and Lillian Kassahn. In 1955, in Oceanside, Calif., she married LeRoy Heath. They later divorced. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1970 from California. Ms. Heath enjoyed her church, her family and going out to eat. Survivors include three sons, Steve, Federal Way, Wash., LeRoy, Tampa, Fla., and Dannie, Seattle; a brother, Dannie Kassahn, Chino, Ariz.; a sister, Joyce Meek, Medford; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Nanci Carter The memorial service for Nanci Carter will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Perl Funeral Home Chapel, Medford. Terry Rasmussen of Trail Christian Fellowship will officiate. Ms. Carter, 35, of Shady Cove, died Wednesday (June 5, 2002) in an automobile accident on Butte Falls Highway. She was born Feb. 11, 1967, in Anaheim, Calif., to Ben and Kathryn Carter. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1996. Ms. Carter enjoyed the outdoors. Survivors include her parents, Ben and Kathryn Carter; a brother, Jason Carter, Eagle Point; and her grandparents, Bob Brookman, Jean and Jo Vigna, and Howard Carter. Harrold Gene Madden The memorial service for Harrold Gene Madden will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 15, at Selma First Baptist Church. The Rev. Monty Pope will officiate. Mr. Madden, 73, of Cave Junction, died Wednesday (June 5, 2002) at his home. Memorial contributions may be made to Three Rivers Hospice, c/o Rogue Valley Medical Center Foundation, 2600 Siskiyou Blvd., Suite 100, Medford, OR 97504. He was born May 5, 1929, in Tempe, Ariz. He moved to Oxnard, Calif., then to Klamath Falls in 1938, and to the Illinois Valley in 1940. On May 24, 1954, he married Annie Ruth Johnston, who survives. Mr. Madden helped build Camp White. He worked in logging and truck driving. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1948 to 1950. Mr. Madden enjoyed fishing, whittling and wood carving. Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Wayland Madden, Cave Junction, and Kerry Lackey, Bend; two daughters, Renee Lark, Cave Junction, and Andrea Scott, Christmas Valley; five brothers, Bill, White City, Jim, Kerby, Allen, Cave Junction, Fred, McMinnville, and Ted, Grovetown, Ga.; three sisters, Margaret Havey, Gold Hill, Kathleen Keeny, Casper, Wyo., and Nellie Prosser, Redmond; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters. Arrangements: Grants Pass Funeral Alternatives and Crematory. William N. Redhead William N. Redhead, 73, of Jacksonville, died Wednesday (June 5, 2002) at Providence Medford Medical Center. A private service will be held. He was born May 12, 1929, in La Grande, to Clarence and Katherine Redhead. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1945 from La Grande. On Nov. 4, 1949, in Medford, he married Roberta M. Ison, who died in 1993. Mr. Redhead worked for Timber Products for 49 years, retiring in 1994. He was an avid collector of Old West memorabilia. He enjoyed the outdoors and spending time with his family. Survivors include two sons, Tim, Medford, and Christopher, Portland; a daughter, Christina Cook, Juneau, Alaska; and one grandchild. Arrangements: Conger-Morris Funeral Directors, Medford. Joachim A. Koenig Joachim A. Koenig, 86, of Grants Pass, died Wednesday (June 5, 2002) at his home. No service is planned at this time. He was born May 11, 1916, in Sondershousen, Germany, to Otto and Lina Koenig. On Dec. 22, 1941, in Frankfurt, Germany, he married Ingeborg Hohage, who survives. Mr. Koenig worked as a nuclear physicist for the University of Michigan until his retirement in 1977. The Koenigs moved to Southern Oregon from Michigan in 1977. He enjoyed science. Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Kai-Peter, Montclair, Va.; a daughter, Antje Koenig, Issaquah, Wash.; a brother, Guenther, Black Forest, Germany; and three grandchildren. Arrangements: Grants Pass Funeral Alternatives and Crematory. Louis M. Fischer Lou Fischer, 77, of Central Point, died Thursday (June 6, 2002) at Medford Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center. Arrangements will be announced by Central Valley Cremation and Funeral Care. John M. Cunningham A private family service is scheduled for John Marshall Cunningham. Mr. Cunningham, 86, of Ashland, died Tuesday (June 4, 2002) at the Linda Vista Care Center in Ashland. He was born July 28, 1915, in Deer Lodge, Mont., the son of John and Sue Cunningham. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific. While living in Santa Barbara, Calif., he became a published novelist. He moved to Ashland in 1985. Mr. Cunningham is survived by a son, Richard Cunningham of LaFayette, Calif.; and a daughter, Mary Howard of Austin, Texas. Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Crematory, Ashland. Mary V. Purves Mary V. Purves, 87, of Ashland, died Friday (June 7, 2002) at the Ashland Community Hospital.
