Foundation gives $86,000 to local efforts Ten organizations in four Southern Oregon counties will receive nearly $86,000 for projects from the Gordon Elwood Foundation of Medford. That's less than 30 percent of the amount requested in the latest funding cycle from the foundation started in 2000 by the estate of Gordon Elwood, a self-described miser. Twenty-seven requests totaling $295,266 were submitted, said Executive Director Kathy Bryon. Successful recipients included the following groups: Sarah Corson Childcare and Learning Center, Medford, $10,000 for full-time child-care scholarships for low-income working Rogue Community College students whose children attend the center. SMART program, Josephine County, $10,000 to expand Start Making a Reader Today to Fort Vannoy Elementary School. Rogue Valley Boys and Girls Clubs, Jackson County, $14,650 to reopen the White City club to serve approximately 500 low-income children after school and during the summer. Gold Beach High School, Gold Beach, $10,000 to promote job training and life skills development by purchasing equipment for the set-up of a micro business. Proceeds for the business will support future special education projects. Rogue River Middle School, Rogue River, $4,000 to support guest vocational professionals as part of the Bridges program, which assists students with learning disabilities. Riley Creek School, Curry County, $10,000 to construct a greenhouse on the rural campus of the kindergarten through middle school campus. The program is aimed at promoting a personal and tangible connection between science and real life for special education students. Josephine County YMCA, Grants Pass, $10,000 to help with construction costs for new facilities for families and children involved with youth development agencies. Kennedy Elementary School, Medford, $6,778 for Alphasmart word processor technology to increase classroom participation for 60 students with learning challenges. Children's Advocacy Center, Medford, $5,538 to support the cost of 100 child abuse intervention and support service visits to the center. Video Integrated Diverse Art (La VIDA) English as a Second Language-Bilingual Program at Jefferson Elementary School, Medford, $5,000 to bring art and film into the lives of bilingual students from a wide range of backgrounds. Deadline for the foundation's next funding cycle is March 1.
