Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend October 14, 2005 ‘Biggest Little Rodeo’ spurs on Central Point By BUFFY POLLOCK for the Mail Tribune In hopes of hosting the most spectacular "Biggest Little Rodeo" to date, fairgrounds officials are pardnerin’ with the city of Central Point again this year in kicking off a slew of pre-rodeo events. Fairgrounds manager Chris Borovansky said the idea is to get local rodeo fans in the mood for the annual Wild Rogue Pro Rodeo Oct. 21-23. Downtown is decked out in cowboy silhouettes, the valley’s littlest cowboys are perfecting their rope tricks and downtown Central Point is set to host a barbecue, cowboy fashion show and dance. "We’ve done more and more community outreach in the last few years and I think it’s really drawn folks in" to the rodeo, Borovansky said. "Ten years ago I think you had hardcore rodeo fans showing up that could appreciate what was going on. ... I think what we’ve done is educate the rest of the community to the fact this really is a major league sporting event. If this was baseball, it’d be the Angels and the Red Sox." Advertisement Annual rodeo events begin Saturday with Red Rock Cowboy Church’s Red Rock Ranch Rodeo in the Compton Arena, in conjunction with the "Little Miss & Mister" contest for kids age 2-5, during which the "kindercowboy" crowd will be judged on appearance, size of their "yee-haw" and answers to random cowboy questions. Winners receive a prize package and serve as guests of honor each day of the rodeo, greeting fans during wagon rides prior to the main events. Registration for the Little Miss and Mister are due today before 5 p.m. to the fair office. Also on Saturday, the fourth annual Rodeo Fashion Show will begin at 6 p.m. in Padgham Pavilion at the Expo. The event will include dinner, entertainment, prizes and giveaways. The cost is $25 and seating is limited. To reserve space, call 774-8270. On Thursday, festivities take to downtown streets on the eve of the Pro Rodeo with a community street dance, Agriculture Olympics and a tailgate barbecue in the Premier West Bank parking lot, at Fourth Street between Pine and Oak streets. Official Wild Pro Rodeo events will take place Friday and Saturday, beginning at 7 p.m., and on Sunday — "Family Day" — beginning at 2 p.m. Special family games and activities will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m., including kids’ roping, teddy bear tie downs for kids under 5, face painting, wagon rides and mechanical bull riding. Borovansky said with last year’s event drawing some 9,000 rodeo-ers over a three-day period, this year could only be bigger and better. Second in size only to the annual Jackson County Fair, Borovansky said the local event, one of Pro Rodeo’s final stops before national finals in December in Las Vegas, is estimated to add $2 million to the local economy. Admission varies: Friday and Sunday, all seats are $12 in advance and $14 at the door; Saturday, general admission tickets are $12 advance and $14 at the door (reserved seating is $14 advance and $16 at the door). On Sunday, kids 12 and under pay half price. Advance tickets are available at all PremierWest Bank locations, Ray’s Food Place in Central Point and Totally Texas in Medford.
