I've wanted an answer to this question for years and hope you can find the answer. How in the world did the phrase "how come" become a substitute for "why"? When you look at it and listen to it, the phrase really makes no sense and especially not as a substitute like that. -- Jean F., Eagle Point Hmm. After pondering this for a bit Jean, we found a way to help the reason emerge. Looking at it again, add some missing words, and how the meaning came to be hint hint quickly becomes clear: HOW did this COME to be? HOW had this COME to pass? HOW does that COME to be true? On the surface it appears to be a nonsense or ignorant use, but it's really just a better way of saying something. That's always our excuse, anyway. We humans are quite efficient at tweaking words and their meanings, dontcha think? It's a beautiful example we think of how language evolves.
