AP Beavers edge Cardinal in opener The Associated Press CORVALLIS — Postseason play is getting to be old hat for the Oregon State Beavers. After a 4-3 win Saturday night in a best-of-three Super Regional series with Stanford, Oregon State is one win away from making its second College World Series in a row. This for a team that hadn’t been to the CWS since 1952. Dallas Buck scattered eight hits across eight innings to pitch the fourth-ranked Beavers past No. 17 Stanford Saturday night. The Beavers augmented their ground-ball pitching ace with stellar defense and a timely go-ahead RBI by catcher Mitch Canham in the eighth. "There are so many guys who contribute in so many ways," said 12th-year Oregon State coach Pat Casey. "Guys are getting tired of hearing me talk about attitude and toughness. They’ve already got it." Stanford junior Greg Reynolds (7-6), the No. 2 pick in the major league draft, pitched into the eighth, striking out nine and allowing seven hits. But the 6-foot-7 junior walked in one run and balked in another. Advertisement Reynolds had pitched five complete games in his last six starts. But he suffered control problems early. "We gave them a couple extra outs and they took advantage of it, which is what good teams do," said Stanford coach Mark Marquess. Buck (12-2), a third-round pick of the Arizona Diamondbacks, struck out six and walked two. Oregon State went up in the first inning when Reynolds was called for a balk, scoring Chris Kunda from third base. Jim Rapoport hit a two-run homer in the third to give Stanford the lead. But Reynolds got into trouble again in the bottom of the third, giving up an RBI single to Ashland High graduate Bill Rowe and then walking in a run with the bases loaded. Canham’s eighth-inning double scored Rowe, and Buck got out of a jam in the bottom of the of the inning after getting John Hester to ground into a 6-4-3 double play. Oregon State junior Kevin Gunderson set down the Cardinal in the ninth for his 17th save. The Cardinal (33-26), defeated North Carolina State 17-7 in the championship game of the Austin Regional last weekend. Stanford earlier beat Texas, the tournament’s No. 3 seed. Oregon State swept Stanford in a three-game series in Corvallis during the regular season, but the Cardinal rebounded to win nine of their last 15 conference games. The Beavers — nine of whom were picked in Tuesday’s draft — are 26-4 at Coleman Field this year. Stanford has lost six of seven to Oregon State in the last two seasons and sits on the verge of missing the College World Series for the third year in a row. "That’s enough incentive to motivate you and if it’s not, you should move on," said shortstop Chris Minaker. "It’s going to come down to performance." The Beavers (43-14), who beat Hawaii to advance out of the Corvallis Regional, send 10-4 Jonah Nickerson to the mound today. Nolan Gallagher (5-4) will start for Stanford.
