Boots rushed for 211 yards and two touchdowns. The 6-foot, 190-pound senior running back scored a pair of second quarter touchdowns to help Phoenix take a 21-0 lead. Boots sprinted 74 yards off tackle for his first TD with 10:40 left in the quarter, then capped a 65-yard, five-play drive with a 9-yard scoring run. "Overall North Bend did a good job defending Max," Phoenix coach Gordy Crowston said. "We kept pounding Max and our offensive line did a good job. Max earned his yards tonight." Advertisement Riley Gibson’s interception near midfield and return set up the Pirates’ first touchdown with 4:18 remaining in the opening period. The 37-yard, seven-play march finished on an 11-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Matt Hagert to receiver Dan Ritchie. The first of two touchdown passes from Joe Bollig to Landon Durand cut the Pirates lead to 21-6 at halftime. Phoenix recovered an on-side kick to open the second half and capitalized when Justin Pecor finished the 56 yard march with a 5-yard run. Wide receiver Joey Shepherd caught a key 34-yard pass from Hagert on the first play of the drive. Earlier Hagert hooked up with Shepherd on a 47-yard completion to help set up the Pirates’ second touchdown. North Bend took advantage of two Phoenix fumbles in the fourth quarter to cut into the Pirates’ lead. Durand caught a 66-yard TD pass from Bollig to pull the Bulldogs to within eight points with 2:52 remaining in the game. The Pirates responded by taking the ensuing kickoff and marching to North Bend’s 31 when the game ended. "We didn’t close it out the way we wanted," said Crowston. "Defensively we gave up some big plays, but other than that we played solid." Phoenix rushed for 285 yards and added 125 through the air. North Bend accounted for 296 yards in offense. The Chieftains outgained Douglas 259-146 on the ground, led by 95 yards from senior tailback Nate Kinman. Sophomore Vince Reyes added 54 yards on only three carries. A 25-yard interception return by senior lineman Steve Rabitoy swung the momentum in Rogue River’s favor, giving them a 17-0 lead early in the fourth quarter. Douglas’ John Tommasini rushed for one touchdown and passed for another as time expired. Josh Steinbrook threw for 216 yards for the Papermakers and Zach Weaver caught four passes for 115 yards. Dusty Bassett broke away for a 79-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and finished with 158 yards for Washougal, a Southwestern Washington school. Joe Jiron paced the Mustangs with four receptions, including a 30-yard pass from Jeff Eggleston in the fourth quarter. Sam Dollarhide ran for 94 yards. Stephens hooked up with speedy, senior receiver Isaiah Smith for scoring receptions of 34, 22 and 73 yards. Willamette grabbed an initial 7-0 lead when Jon Hartman returned the opening kickoff for a 95-yard touchdown. It was all Roseburg after that. The Indians took the lead for good less than one minute later when Josh Brink hauled in a 46-yard TD pass from Stephens and Brian Benson ran in the 2-point conversion. Smith caught the first of his touchdowns with 6:52 left in the opening quarter and Stephens’ 15-yard second quarter TD run sent the Indians into halftime with a 22-7 lead. Stephens was 13-of-20 passing for 273 yards. Roseburg tacked on 162 yards rushing. The Wolverines were limited to 45 yards on the ground and gained 217 through the air. KLAMATH UNION 28, SOUTH UMPQUA 14 — At Tri City, Klamath Union’s Jon Saxton capped a game-opening drive with a 3-yard touchdown run and added another score on the ground as the Pelicans beat Class 3A South Umpqua. Klamath Union outgained the Lancers 297-60 on the ground and Daniel Bennett completed 10 of 19 passes for 166 yards. South Umpqua scored both of its touchdowns in a 3-minute span in the fourth quarter on a touchdown run and 73-yard interception return.
