The Steed sale, which includes some 6.07 million board feet in the Gold Beach Ranger District, was purchased by CLR Timber Holdings Inc. of Brookings for the advertised rate of $241,138. The firm’s bid was the only one received during the auction held at the agency headquarters in Medford. The sale covers 391 acres. However, the sale of two units, the Chetco sale in the Chetco Ranger District and the Lazy sale in the Galice Ranger District, were stopped after two bidders spoke to each other during the auction, according to Judy McHugh, spokeswoman for the Biscuit fire salvage project. Timber sale auction regulations forbid bidders from communicating with each other during an auction, she said. Those sales will be readvertised and offered later, she said. Advertisement The Chetco sale includes 289,000 board feet of timber while the Lazy sale includes 4.3 million board feet. The next auction is scheduled for Aug. 18. Thus far, five timber salvage sales totaling some 40 million board feet of timber have been sold since the agency began offering them in early July. The Biscuit fire, located primarily in the Siskiyou National Forest, covered nearly half a million acres. It was sparked by a lightning storm on July 13, 2002. The agency announced earlier this summer that it plans to salvage about 370 million board feet of fire-killed timber from the fire. However, the proposal has been the target of litigation by those opposed to the proposal.
