St. Mary's advances to semifinals PENDLETON - One Class 2A power down, one more to go for the St. Mary's boys basketball team in its quest toward the state title game. The Crusaders recovered from a 27-17 halftime deficit to oust No. 2 Gold Beach, 44-38, in a quarterfinal game at the Class 2A state tournament on Wednesday. St. Mary's squares off against top-ranked Dayton on Friday at 7 p.m. in a semifinal game. "Everybody said our bracket is the toughest," said St. Mary's coach Tim Pflug. "If we get through and win this thing there'll be no doubt we earned it." The Crusaders didn't help themselves much, shooting just 8 of 31 from the free throw line. St. Mary's did hold its own on the boards against a much bigger Gold Beach squad, however, emerging with a 34-30 edge. The Crusaders also forced 17 turnovers and had 12 steals with Peter Staver's four leading the way. Thatcher Jones poured in a game-high 17 points, while Jared Sharp added 10 points and 12 rebounds. "I'm very proud of the kids tonight," said Pflug. "We had a tough first half and looked really lethargic. "But we had a talk at halftime and they came out fired-up. That's probably our most consistent attribute. We never think we're out of a game and we keep on playing hard." Dustin Marsh led Gold Beach with 15 points and eight boards. The Challengers shot a blistering 65 percent in the first half as they took a 42-24 lead and coasted to their 17th victory against 11 losses this season. Not too shabby for a team playing in the 8 a.m. breakfast bracket. "We had the kids up at 5:30 - we wanted to get our blood flowing," Cascade Christian coach Brian Morse said. Girls DAYTON 33, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 26 - At Pendleton, poor free-throw shooting proved to be the undoing of Cascade Christian in a quarterfinals game at the Class 2A state girls tournament. The Challengers made just 8 of 20 from the charity stripe as they saw a 23-18 lead evaporate in the fourth quarter. Cascade Christian, 22-4, meets Knappa, a 78-58 loser to Gold Beach, in a consolation game at 3 p.m. today. The Pirates soared past the Challengers in the fourth period when they went on a 15-3 run. Lindsey Potter scored seven of her nine points in the final period for Dayton. Cindy Walsh led the Pirates with 11 points. "We did a good job of taking the ball to the basket but we just couldn't convert our free throws," Cascade Christian coach Loren King said. Dayton scored six straight points to open the fourth quarter, enabling the Pirates to grab a 24-23 lead they held to the finish. "They ran a weave and got a couple of layups on the backside," King said. Whitney Brookins led Cascade with nine points and 10 rebounds and Hannah Gettman added six points.
