"It's really a different kind of Spotlight," director Presila Quinby says. "It's a story, it's more like a short little play between four characters." Spotlight on Musical Theatre will showcase favorite Broadway tunes from the 1950s on. It previews Thursday, Aug. 11, with performances at 8 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays through Aug. 21. As with other Spotlight shows, 22 songs are interspersed with information about the music or show. But Spotlight on Musical Theatre will feature four singers — David King-Gabriel, Aubrey Campbell, Paula Flowers and Zaq Wentworth — playing characters in a loosely knit plot written by Cathy Noah, city editor of the Mail Tribune, a trivia quiz with prizes, and prerecorded music arranged by Karl Iverson. Quinby has directed the majority of the Spotlight shows. "All four of these performers are really terrific," Quinby says. "Given the cast that was chosen, we wanted to feature each of them and by doing that, we realized we were covering a lot of bases that musical theater does." Drawing from the wide genre of musical theater, Quinby says, the songs were selected to provide a sample platter, from duets to solos, dance numbers to love ballads. "The idea was to hit on some highlights, to include some familiar material from musical theater but to also include some new music from shows in the 21st century that our audiences won't be familiar with," she says. Some of the songs audiences will hear and learn about include: "Friend Like Me," from "Aladdin." With Robin Williams singing the Disney film version, this dance number is a high-energy show-stopper. James Monroe Iglehart won a 2014 Tony Award for his portrayal of Genie in the Broadway production. "Somewhere That's Green," from "Little Shop of Horrors." Audrey sings of her American-Dream dreams in this creepy yet lovable number written by Alan Menken. "For Good," from "Wicked." A lovely female-voiced duet, this number emphasizes storyline with touching lyrics: "Because I knew you, I have been changed for good." Audiences will learn that this was the only Broadway musical to gross $3 million in one week. "Circle of Life," from "The Lion King." This song was nominated for Academy and Golden Globe awards for Best Original Song in the 1994 Disney film. The show first came to the stage in 1997 and features music by Elton John and lyrics by Tim Rice. "Bring Him Home," from "Les Miserables." The star-studded 2012 film featured Hugh Jackman singing this tragic solo as Jean Valjean. Desolate lyrics such as "Let me die, let him live" set the tone for the piece. With 22 songs over two acts, the show will take audiences through the gamut of emotions while celebrating the aesthetic range of musicals in the last several decades. "I've worked theaters all over two continents and I've never encountered anything like this. I hope we haven't bitten off more than we could chew," Quinby says with a laugh. "I'm excited to see where it'll go from here." Tickets are $22 for the preview, $26 to $32 for all others. Rush tickets are available for $18 10 minutes before showtime.
