Mail Tribune / Roy Musitelli North picks up where it left off Sevano’s no-hitter highlights top-ranked Black Tornado’s 2-0 start to the season during its own star- studded tournament By KEVIN GOFF Mail Tribune The top-ranked North Medford softball team didn’t do anything to dislodge itself from the head of the Class 4A pack on Monday. South Medford, meanwhile, continues to make noise. The defending state champion Black Tornado (2-0), took out its first two opponents of the season at the 16-team North Medford Invitational tournament at Jackson and Fagone Fields. The tournament features seven of the top 10 ranked teams in the state, including No. 2 Westview. The Panthers (5-3) finished the day at 1-1, with a 4-1 loss to North Eugene and a 3-2 victory over Gresham in eight innings. They had only one day off after playing six games in two days at a weekend tournament. North Medford plays Westview today at 9 a.m., then meets Crescent Valley at 10:45 a.m. South Medford takes on Crescent Valley at 9 a.m., then finishes up with South Salem at 12:40 p.m. North Medford’s Keri Sevano tossed a no-hitter and struck out nine in the 3-1 victory over South Salem. North later beat Barlow, 7-2. Brandi Paxton went 2-for-3 with two RBIs for North, but it was the arm of Sevano that proved the difference. "She was pretty sharp," said first-year North Medford coach Brent Barry. "They scored their run and then didn’t get another base runner after that." The Black Tornado used its first-game momentum and the pitching of Kendra Strahm to cruise to the win over Barlow. Strahm gave up eight hits, but kept the ball down and forced several ground-ball outs. Beth Morrill and Paxton each had two hits. For South Medford, Darci Byrne labored through three innings, giving up three runs, while the offense struggled to get anything going against North Eugene. "Darci’s hurting a little," said first-year Panthers coach Dan Marshall. "Her arm’s a little sore after playing. It’s been eight games now in four days." But the Panthers came back in the second game to edge Gresham in extra innings. Jonni Byrne drove home the game-winner in the eighth inning of an international tiebreaker. The Panthers loaded the bases and Byrne sent a single up the middle with two outs to clinch the win. Jennifer Mendenhall kept Gresham in check, fanning 10 and yielding only three hits in the complete-game effort. Jackie Chaplin and Jonni Byrne each had two hits.
