Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend October 5, 2005 Campbell tabbed head baseball coach at Crater By DON HUNT Mail Tribune CENTRAL POINT — Jay Campbell has paid his dues as a freshman and varsity assistant coach at Crater High. Now he’ll get a chance to lead the show. Campbell, 30, was named the school’s head baseball coach Tuesday. He’s switching places with Jim Powell, 48, who led the program the past three seasons but wanted a smaller role in order to spend more time with his family. Campbell was Powell’s varsity assistant the past two years. "Jim has the program in excellent shape, and now it’s my turn to run with it," Campbell said. "I’ve been waiting for my opportunity (to be a varsity head coach)." Advertisement Campbell has enjoyed great success at the younger levels. He coached the Crater freshman basketball teams to 21-0 and 20-4 records the past two seasons, and last summer he led the American Legion baseball squad to a 30-10 mark and a berth in the American Legion A state tournament, where it finished third. The high school team, which finished 13-13 overall and 10-11 in the Southern Oregon Conference last spring, will return a strong nucleus of players. It includes outfielder Tyler Davis, catcher Charlie Reina, first baseman Tyler Schmidt and pitchers Tony Davidson, Josh Zelecki and Chris Thomas. "Crater has a good baseball tradition, and it’s my hope and my intention to keep it going," said Campbell, a 1993 graduate of Eagle Point High and a 1998 graduate of Pacific University in Forest Grove. "I like the players we have coming back." Campbell will coach the freshman hoop team one more season. Powell, meanwhile, will continue to serve as an assistant coach in football as well as helping out Campbell. "I was originally hired on an interim basis and I did it for three years," said Powell, who succeeded Chuck Dominiak as the school’s head baseball coach following the 2002 season. "I want to coach both football and baseball, but I’m comfortable being an assistant coach. I don’t have the time right now to be a head coach."
