The Grizzly girls snowboard team clinched its fourth consecutive state championship, while the boys followed with a second-place effort. The snowboard teams competed in the halfpipe, slopestyle and boardercross competitions, battling against obstacles that included 50 mph winds, minimal training in one event and a mountain that no one on the team had competed on all season. The halfpipe competition was slated to take place on Friday but was postponed until Saturday because the wind wouldn’t let up. Despite not having a halfpipe at Mount Ashland to practice on, the Ashland girls won the competition with 760 points, beating out Lake Oswego (650) and Lincoln (542). Ashland sophomore Becca Margulies led the team with an individual third-place finish with 216 points. Advertisement "Ashland was the only team that qualified (in the halfpipe) in the Southern League," Grizzlies coach Matt Faurot said. All six girls who competed in the halfpipe finished in the top 15 out of the 30 qualifiers. Junior Sierra Law took seventh, followed by junior Soleil Rowan-Caneer in eighth place. Defending individual boardercross champion Alison Wren was ninth. The Ashland boys narrowly won third place in the halfpipe with 706 points, behind Summit (809) and Rex Putnam (714). Seth Hill of St. Mary’s won the halfpipe with 247 points. Ashland senior Galen Prichard led the Ashland boys, taking 13th place with 119 points, followed by freshman Noa Yates in 15th place, sophomore Kiko Minniti in 17th and senior Eli Otter in 19th. Both Ashland’s girls and boys teams took second in the slopestyle competitions. Ashland sophomore Zoe Elterman led the girls team with 231 points, with Wren taking 10th and junior Zaya McSky tying for 14th. Prichard placed fourth overall, leading the Ashland boys with 394 points, followed by Minniti in 10th, senior Koty Lopez 12th, Daniele Minniti in 18th and Rick Saler in 19th. The third event in the state competition was the boardercross race, which is has two components: the team race and individual elimination. In the team event, the Ashland girls placed second and the boys third. Despite the high team rankings, there were some surprise upsets due to large pileups at the beginning of the race. Ashland senior Caitlin Maddigan took second place in the boardercross finals and McSky was fourth. Ashland’s Prichard took fifth place surrounded by racers from Grants Pass and St. Mary’s.
