Roseburg heads 4A all-state list Wire and staff reports One source provided all of the Southern Oregon Conference's representation on the Class 4A all-state football teams. Roseburg, which proved it boasted the deepest well of talent in the SOC by going 7-0 in conference play, claimed seven spots on the three all-state teams that were announced Tuesday. Tight end/defensive lineman Joe Newton, a 6-foot-8, 235-pound senior who is considered one of the top collegiate recruits in Oregon, was named first team on both offense and defense. Senior offensive tackle Willie Kingry (6-4, 320) and senior linebacker Cody Parker (6-1, 200) were second-team selections. Senior tailback Rod Cope (6-0, 165), the SOC offensive player of the year, and senior offensive guard Evan Caddock (6-1, 220) were voted to the third-team offense. Senior defensive back Kellen Walker (5-8, 160) made the third-team defense. Honorable mention was kinder to the SOC's other programs. Junior quarterback Boomer Marshall (6-3, 215) and senior wide receiver Ryan Heil (5-11, 160) of South Medford, senior linebacker Alan Borelli (6-1, 198) of North Medford and senior linebacker Speedy Ortiz (5-8, 180) and senior punter Bruce Voges (6-2, 175) of Grants Pass all received honorable mention. Roseburg senior James Metcalf (6-2, 230) was honorable mention both as a center and a defensive lineman. Fellow Indians Bryan Jorgenson (a 6-3, 235-pound senior offensive tackle) and Luke Swanson (a 6-3, 200-pound senior defensive lineman) were also given honorable mention. Elsewhere, Class 4A champion McNary and Lake Oswego each took five spots on the first teams. One of Lake Oswego's players, Mark Maher, was selected offensive player of the year with a single-season Class 4A rushing record of 2,412 yards on 318 carries. McNary lineman Martin Miller was chosen best defensive player of the year with 76 tackles, 23 sacks and four fumble recoveries, two of which he returned for touchdowns. Marty Johnson, Sheldon's coach of five years, was named coach of the year. His team arrived at the end of the regular season unbeaten. "We came in here five years ago with pretty high expectations," Johnson said. "And I'm proud to be associated with a program that is where it's at in such a short amount of time." The Class 4A all-state football team was selected by a vote of the state's coaches. Nominations were made by representatives from the state's nine 4A leagues.
