Ed Lindbloom, whom I know well, is exactly the kind of board member we need to improve our schools. Dawn Copple, whom I know of, I am led to believe shares those views. Teachers would no doubt like former teachers, district employees, or union reps to man the board, as would the fox like to be assigned to guard the hen-house. I recommend Lindbloom and Copple if you would like to see meaningful changes in the schools. Raymond Smith Central Point Background checks popular Over 90 percent of Americans favor universal background checks, so kudos to our Legislature for standing up to the gun lobby’s tyranny. The NRA used to support such common-sense gun laws, but over time has evolved into one more money-grubbing political lobby, promoting the self-proclaimed “right” of gun manufacturers to sell any number of any weapons to anybody. Extremists reacted to SB 941 with predictable sound and fury, distorting its impact, demonizing its supporters and vilifying lawmakers for responding to the public rather than to their special interest. They seem convinced that Obama is after their guns, and view this as a preliminary step to sending in the black helicopters. What to believe, their paranoid propaganda or the facts? SB 941 is posted online. Those so inclined can read the bill instead of the bull and see that it threatens neither our freedom nor the Second Amendment. In fact it doesn’t infringe on anyone’s right to bear arms unless they have a criminal record. Polls show the vast majority of law-abiding gun owners have no problem with that. Guns aren’t a religion; they are weapons that warrant reasonable regulation, and it doesn’t get more reasonable than background checks. Michael Steely Medford No-smoke burns? Kurt Austermann (May 12) complains about the smoke from the Ashland controled burn. Yes, most of us are annoyed by smoke, but what's the solution? Perhaps big fans to blow it away from him ? Or maybe a big funnel to channel it up into the ozone? What about the disastrous wildfires that come from not doing any controlled burns? How does he want that smoke handled? Does he remember the Biscuit fire? Or has he ever lived anywhere there are huge wildfires every year? I have. What would he have suggested be done about the smoke that came from Siberia? Set up fans at the shore to blow it back to Siberia? Didn’t that bother him? It did me. Maybe Mr. Austermann has invented a new kind of controlled burn that doesn’t emit any smoke. Sounds like he has when he says, "I don’t support burns that leave smoke in their wakes for us to breathe." If there is to be no breeze when they burn, then the smoke will either just sit on the ground around him or remain in the air around him.
