The story of the little girl with Mermaid Syndrome. The wire story said she was going to have surgery on Feb. 24. That little face and spirit so touched my heart that I cut her photo and put it above my kitchen sink. I wish I could have saved the entire article. There might have been an e-mail address or other follow-up information. Feb. 24, I held her in my thoughts and prayers. I never heard another word about her. Do you think this means she died? Doctors have decided to wait a bit longer for the surgery. Ten-month-old Milagros has a rare condition called sirenomella "Mermaid Syndrome." Her legs move separately but are connected with flesh. Children born with this condition usually die a few hours after birth. But Milagros ("miracles" in Spanish) survived. Jude Webber, a Reuters correspondent in Lima, Peru, who has closely followed the story, kindly offered the following response to your question: "I just spoke last week to the doctor in charge of Milagros’ surgery. Everything is proceeding fine; she has had the silicone bags inserted between her legs and they are being filled with saline solution to stretch the skin to prepare her for the separation surgery. She has had her last session of hyperbaric therapy, which was to help heal the incisions made when the silicone bags were inserted. And now we’re all waiting for the separation surgery; basically nothing is scheduled between now and whenever that happens ... it may now be later than April. We’re keeping in touch on this and will definitely do a story when there are firm indications of when the surgery could be. "...
