Payrolls swelled by 1,390 jobs in October primarily due to both local and state government hiring increasing. Local education added 940 jobs, while state education added 460 jobs over the month. October's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 7.1 percent, down from 7.4 percent in September, and below the 8.5 percent figure a year ago. Retail trade jobs picked up in anticipation of holiday spending, adding 360 jobs in October. The trend is expected to continue into December. Healthcare payrolls continued on the uptick, adding 60 jobs, while manufacturing saw a smaller gain of 50 positions. As tourist season ended and weather began to change leisure and hospitality employment fell by 290 jobs and construction slipped by 40 jobs in October. Year-over-year, private-sector payrolls grew 4 percent, adding 2,800 spots. Retail trade had the largest net job gain during the past 12 months, adding 750 positions. Construction showed durability, adding 290 jobs over the year, an 8.3 percent gain, the biggest jump in the private sector. Manufacturing picked up 330 positions, professional and business services added 300 people, health care and social assistance grew by 510 jobs with leisure and hospitality picking up 180. In Josephine County, the seasonally adjusted jobless rate fell to 8.2 percent in October from 8.5 percent the previous month. A year ago it was 9.5 percent.
