A doubleheader split against Mazama Saturday cost the Pirates at least a guaranteed share of the league title and the Skyline’s top draw to the Class 3A state playoffs. The Vikings pinned a 5-4 loss on Phoenix in the opener, then the Pirates ended a modest two-game losing streak by salvaging the split 4-1 behind the pitching of senior Nicole Engle. If the Pirates (14-9, 12-5 Skyline) would have won both games against Mazama, Phoenix would have clinched the conference’s No. 1 playoff position because of a doubleheader victory earlier over the Hornets. A Henley sweep over Illinois Valley moved the Hornets into a first-place tie with Phoenix with one game remaining. Phoenix plays at Henley on Tuesday with the conference championship and No. 1 playoff berth at stake. We know we’ve got to make our own opportunities in Klamath Falls." In the opener, Phoenix battled back from a 4-0 deficit by scoring a pair of runs in the third and fifth innings to knot the score at 4-all. In the sixth, Mazama produced the winning run when Ashlie McDaniel opened with a single, was sacrificed to second, went to third on a ground out and scored on an RBI single by Stacey Northrop. Danielle Stratton paced Mazama’s attack with a double, triple, one run scored and one RBI. Phoenix got two hits each from Tawnya Tidwell and Shonda George. "We could feel bad about the first game or show a little character," Pendergast said she told her team between games. "Our girls have a great way of digging down. They never give up no matter what the circumstances are." In Game 2, Engle surrendered a run on two hits in the first inning, then blanked the Vikings on four hits the rest of the way. Engle had eight strikeouts, hit one batter and walked one. "(Engle) did a wonderful job moving the ball around and hitting her locations," said Pendergast. "She’s increased her velocity and confidence. She’s throwing the ball very well now and has become a force to be reckoned with." Phoenix answered right back with a run in the bottom of the first. George opened with a walk, was bunted to second, stole third and scored on a swinging-bunt ground out by Terra Fry. The Pirates added single runs on Fry’s single and Tidwell’s RBI single in the third, Alex Hanscom’s single and an RBI single by George in the fourth and Jaclyn Unruh’s single and Hanscom’s RBI single in the fifth.
