Get Out: Friday, December 12 Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Dec. 12, 2014 at 12:01 AM Posted Dec. 12, 2014 at 12:01 AM » Social News To have an event listed in Get Out!, email the information to [email protected] Sterling Mine Ditch Trail Work Party Saturday: Dec. 13 : The Siskiyou Uplands Trail Association will hold its final trail work party of 2014, focusing on the Sterling Mine Ditch Trail section from the Deming Trailhead north toward the Grub Gulch Trail, doing light trimming and much-needed tread work. There will be a no-more-than four-mile roundtrip hike, returning to the Deming Trailhead for lunch (food provided by SUTA). This portion of the trail passes through lush forest, oak woodlands and some drier southwest-facing slopes, affording views of mountains to the west. The event is from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. To reach the work party, turn onto the Deming-Armstrong Road off of Sterling Creek Road close to the 9-mile marker — bear left at the “T,” and drive 7/10ths of a mile up to the trailhead. For detailed driving direction, visit www.sutaoregon.org . Wear comfortable hiking or work boots, dress in layers, and bring gloves.  If you have them, please bring loppers, a pruning saw or a tread tool such as a Pulaski, Grubber or sturdy shovel. Bring water and whatever snacks you like. SUTA supplies additional trail tools. Rogue Valley Walkers Saturday, Dec. 20: This Ashland Town Walk will take in the town's Christmas Lights. KS Wild outings Saturday, Dec. 20: KS Wild will lead an exploration of all things mycological in the heart of the Klamath-Siskiyou. The destination for this hike is yet to be announced depending on the weather and what trails are accessible. Carpool will meet at the Ashland Outdoor Store at 9 a.m. Bring water, comfortable walking shoes, dress for the weather in lots of warm layers and a lunch. Saturday, Jan. 10: Explore the oak-covered hills of the Little Applegate on the Sterling Mine Ditch Trail. The trail is accessible year round, so the group will go rain, snow or shine. Saturday, Jan. 17: KS Wild staffer Jeanine Moy and botanical-area adopters will lead a hike to the Rough and Ready Botanical Area in the Illinois Valley. The area is home to some of the most diverse plant life in the region. Time permitting, the group will stop at French Flat, another botanical area at risk for misuse. The group will carpool from Northwest Nature Shop, 154 Oak St., Ashland. Dress in layers and sturdy shoes, and bring water and lunch. Holiday Hustle 5K Saturday, Dec. 13: The third annual race, sponsored by the Junior League of Jackson County, starts at 5 p.m. at Twin Creeks Park, 555 Twin Creeks Crossing Loop, Central Point. Rogue Valley Audubon Society Tuesday, Jan. 27 : The Rogue Valley Audubon Society's monthly meeting will feature Forrest English speaking about Rogue Riverkeeper's work to protect clean water and fish throughout the Rogue Basin, and he will touch on how that work can affect birds. Every Saturday: Siskiyou VeloMelo rides begin at various morning hours from different locations. 20 to 25 miles. Rides are easy pace (10-13 mph) and terrain with frequent stops to regroup. The rides are for experienced group riders who wish to ride in periodic pace lines at a moderate-plus average pace (16 to 18 mph); more than 50 miles, on mostly hilly terrain.
