Red-hot Hendricks leads Phoenix TALENT - Senior midfielder John Hendricks continued his scoring assault, registering his third consecutive hat trick and also notching an assist as Phoenix hammered Henley, 6-1. The Pirates (3-1, 3-1 Dist. 6) used a first-minute goal from senior forward Devin Wilson off an assist from junior fullback John Chavez to get going. In the 28th minute, Hendricks tallied his first goal by finishing a pass from sophomore midfielder John Feeney. A minute later, Hendricks scored what Phoenix coach Dennis Flenner called "one of the sweetest goals we've seen in a long time." Senior sweeper Al Albright dribbled down the right sideline and drove a cross to Hendricks, who headed a shot past the Hornets goalkeeper from about 18 yards out. Henley (2-2 Dist. 6) pulled within 3-1 seconds before halftime by knocking home a loose ball in front of the Pirates' goal. In the second half, senior forward David Peterson assisted on Hendricks' third goal, which came in the 53rd minute. Wilson earned his second tally two minutes later off a Feeney assist, and Peterson completed the scoring in the 62nd minute on a pass from Hendricks. "We're kind of having a little bit of fun right now," said Fleener, whose team blasted North Valley, 8-0, on Thursday. "We're improving every day." Hendricks, who scored 27 goals last season and was honorable mention all-state in addition to first-team all-Skyline, is the ringleader in the fun times. "He's big, strong and fast," Fleener said of his 6-foot-1, 165-pound star. "He puts so much pressure on the other team. ... John's just the monster of the midfield." Phoenix outshot the Hornets, 18-4, and Fleener commended Albright for his performance in leading the Pirates' defense. ST. MARY'S 5, NORTH VALLEY 0 - Thatcher Jones scored two goals, Matt Burt had two assists and a goal and goalkeeper Greg Gradwell posted his third shutout to lead host St. Mary's. The Crusaders (4-1, 4-1 Dist. 6) led 3-0 at halftime. After Burt crossed to Jones at the 16th minute, Peter Staver did likewise, crossing to left sweeper Jordan Frankel, who vollied it in from 12 yards out with a wonderful left-footed goal. Burt scored in the waning moments of the half from 30 yards. Daniel Pires had a goal and Trevin Phillips an assist in the second half. St. Mary's led in shots, 31-2. HIDDEN VALLEY 5, MAZAMA 1 - At Murphy, Dillon Borta scored three goals, including two of three in a three-minute span of the second half, as the Mustangs remained unbeaten. Hidden Valley (5-0, 5-0 Dist. 6) fell behind early, then tied it 1-1 on an Irie Spann score off a Rem Evert assist. But when the goals came for the Mustangs, they came fast. Carlos Orozco passed to Borta for a score at the 64th minute, then Torrent Saunders made a brilliant, end-to-end run before crossing to Borta for a goal at 68:00. One minute later, Borta scored off an assist from Evert, and two minutes after that, T.J. Thayer tallied with help from Mo Arteaga. ROGUE RIVER 5, ILLINOIS VALLEY 0 - At Cave Junction, Rogue River, which had struggled offensively, received goals from five players. The Chieftains (2-3 Dist. 6) took a 3-0 halftime lead. Scoring for Rogue River were Jed Dunlap, Andrew Grajalez, Jason Luchterhand, Adam Marland and Jesse O'Gara. Fred Perryman registered the shutout in goal. District 6 Girls ST. MARY'S 5, ILLINOIS VALLEY 1 - Junior forward Emily Smith tallied three first-half goals as St. Mary's won its District 6-opener. Margo Chamberlain assisted on Smith's first two scores and Jodi Luce provided the assist on the third. Smith now has six goals on the season. When St. Mary's (3-0-1, 1-0 District 6) scored its third goal of the first half at 36 minutes, the Crusaders moved goalkeeper Annie Maurer to center halfback. Maurer played the second half at stopper along with Smith. Liz Triblehorn gave the Crusaders a 4-0 lead with a goal just under five minutes into the second half. And Lauren Huizinga completed St. Mary's scoring on a penalty kick. Illinois Valley got its lone goal on a breakaway by Jessica Ledford at the 71st minute. NORTH VALLEY 5, DOUGLAS 0 - At Winston, Shea Miller and Malloree Enoch each scored twice and Karyn Allen had an uneventful day in goal as the Knights cruised to a non-conference victory. North Valley (2-1-2 overall) outshot Douglas 26-1, with Allen's only touches in the first half coming when her teammates passed the ball to her. Miller opened the scoring in the 17th minute off an assist on a cross by Sara Moorehouse. Enoch scored in the 23rd minute on a penalty kick awarded after a handball infraction. Senior midfielder Hollina Hickey took a corner kick by Moorehouse on the far post in the 44th minute and settled it into the net for a 3-0 lead. Enoch was credited with her second goal four minutes later when a scramble for a loose ball ended with a deflection by a Douglas player into her own goal. Miller capped the scoring in the 70th minute on an unassisted effort. HIDDEN VALLEY 1, ELMIRA 1 - At Grants Pass, Hidden Valley tied the non-conference match at the Josephine County Fairgrounds but lost a key player when junior defender Kim Hill suffered a broken ankle after colliding with an opponent. Shae Ford of Hidden Valley provided a 1-0 lead at the 28th minute when she rebounded a deflection off the Elmira goalkeeper. Renee Johnson knotted it for Elmira on a similar shot at the 60th minute. The Mustangs (1-3-1 overall) were originally scheduled to play Klamath Union, but the match was changed.
