Hidden Valley retools Class 3A playoff hopes MURPHY -- Hidden Valley is back in familiar territory, but the Mustangs look for better results in the Class 3A state football playoffs. Hidden Valley (9-1), which got knocked out of last year's state playoffs 41-30 by Central in a similar home second-round game, plays host to Cowapa League runner-up Astoria (6-4) at 1 p.m. today at the Mustangs new stadium adjacent to the high school in Murphy. The Mustangs enter the contest on the heels of their second consecutive undefeated Skyline Conference season, but Astoria presents a different challenge than Central did the year before. Where Central defeated the Mustangs with a wide-open offense, Astoria's wishbone attack is better suited for a Mustangs' defense that posted two shutouts and allowed just 106 points all season. All-league fullback Lyman Hiter, who rushed for six touchdowns and 341 yards in the Fishermen's 47-6 playoff victory over Baker last week, combines with quarterback Nathan Connaway and halfback Joe Jenson as Astoria's main offensive threats. Hidden Valley, which received a first-round bye, counters with two-time Skyline Conference offensive player of the year Tim Orr, who gained 1,232 yards and 12 touchdowns in seven games this season. Today's Hidden Valley-Astoria winner will play Central (10-1) in next week's quarterfinals. Central upended Estacada (9-1), 36-6, Friday night in second round state playoff action. Hidden Valley boys garner top district soccer awards Hidden Valley's success in District 6 boys soccer carried over to all-star selections with five players being named to the first team. Coach Charlie Seal earned coach of the year honors and senior Jesse Johnson was named player of the year. Seal, receiving his second consecutive coaching honor, wasn't surprised with the conference's choices. "Usually, when you have a good season this is bound to happen," he said. Seal credited his success to "a great coaching staff and a phenomenal group of kids -- that made the difference. My job was pretty easy this year." Johnson led the Mustangs, with 18 goals and 10 assists, to their first unbeaten league season and a second straight district championship. "Jesse is an intense soccer player," Seal said. "Every practice and every game he gives 110 percent." Hidden Valley midfielder Ben Jaramillo earned his third consecutive first-team selection. "Ideally they should have been co-players of the year," Seal said. "Jesse's selection had a lot to do with numbers." Jaramillo had 10 goals and 10 assists for the Mustangs in their 9-0 conference campaign. Seal also lauded seniors Aaron Johnson and Ben Miljkovich, who earned first-time selections. St. Mary's had two players selected to the first team, senior Jordan Frimkess and senior Mako Miyamoto.
