Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend April 22, 2006 Allison Machado Medford’s Machado falls short at Miss USA pageant Despite being one of 37 brunettes who competed Friday night in 55th Annual Miss USA Pageant, Miss Oregon Allison Machado stood out to her many fans in Jackson County. And though Miss Kentucky Tara Elizabeth Conner left with the crown, Machado’s future remains bright as her "megawatt smile," supporters said. "We are so proud of her," said Stephanie Ferrell, director of the Miss Southern Oregon USA and Miss Southern Teen USA pageants. "She looked amazing and was wonderful." Phoenix-resident Ferrell watched the event with family and friends, all of whom cheered when Machado appeared on television. A Medford resident and product of Phoenix-Talent schools, Machado, 24, is a medical assistant at the Medford Medical Clinic and serves as a surgical "scrub" for Medford plastic surgeon Dr. Robert Jensen. A relative newcomer to pageants, Machado’s first attempt resulted in her being named as first runner-up in last year’s Miss Southern Oregon pageant. Advertisement Machado expressed her feelings about the past few months with Ferrell during a phone conversation in the hours before the pageant. "She was totally and completely content with what ever the results were," Ferrell said. Machado joins the swelling ranks of Southern Oregonians who have been crowned at either the state or national level for Miss USA. Southern Oregon has had, in the last four years, two Miss Oregon winners and one Miss Teen Oregon who went on to win the the Miss Teen USA title. All in all, it wasn’t a bad way for Machado to spend her 24th birthday. "It’s amazing she made it this far, because she’s not at all a seasoned professional like many of the other girls," Ferrell said. "She’s just a regular girl."
