By JONEL ALECCIA Mail Tribune Getting medical help for the children was the first step for the Medford mother of three. Her 12-year-old son needed glasses. The 9-year-old girl had a skin infection. And they all, including the 8-year-old girl, required dental work. Thanks to the Kids Health Connection, which operates several school-based centers, the children are enrolled in the Oregon Health Plan and receiving services. Advertisement Still, the family is struggling. The mom, who’s in her 30s, is single and looking for work — and a low-cost home. As the cold winter closes in, this mom is seeking warm and functional clothing for herself and her children, says Karen Holt, program manager. Everyone’s shoes are worn and ragged, their socks have holes and they have no clothes appropriate for church, Holt says. Donations of clothing and shoes would be helpful. The two girls wear shoes in sizes 2 and 10 and clothing in sizes 5 and 7 slim. The boy wears a size 4½ shoe and size 8-10 clothing. Mom wears a size 8 shoe and size large clothing. Once basic needs are fulfilled, there’s one luxury the mother is secretly seeking. All of the children have asked for roller skates for Christmas. And they want their mother to have a pair, too, so the family can go skating together.
