Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend February 14, 2006 Icy blast expected to chill out region If you thought winter might be over, think again. After a week of balmy days and several record-setting high temperatures, February will shift to colder-than-average temperatures for most of the next week. An Arctic cold front will spread south over the next few days, pushing overnight temperatures down into the low 20s and perhaps even the teens in some areas, said Mike Petrucelli, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service office in Medford. Afternoon temperatures aren’t likely to climb above the mid-40s through the end of the week, Petrucelli said. Whether the cold air brings snow to Southern Oregon depends on whether any storms come in off the ocean during the cold snap, he said. Cold spells in February happen every few years in Southern Oregon. In 1950, overnight lows fell to single digits for three consecutive days Feb. 1-3. The 6-degree reading on Feb. 1, 1950, is Medford’s coldest February temperature in the 90-plus years that the weather service has recorded data for Southern Oregon During a more recent cold snap in 1989, the overnight low was 16 degrees on Feb. 4, 9 degrees on Feb. 5 and 12 degrees on Feb. 6. Medford’s average low temperature for mid-February is about 32 degrees. Record lows for this week range from 14 degrees (Feb. 14, 1950) to 21 degrees (Feb. 17, 1958).
