Fund started for OSF worker hurt in climb ASHLAND � An Ashland man remained in critical condition Friday after suffering head injuries in a mountain climbing accident Sept. 23. David Wieken, 36, is on life-support systems in the intensive care unit at Mercy Medical Center in Redding, Calif. He is a stage manager for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Wieken was injured when he slipped on ice and fell more than 1,000 feet while climbing Mount Shasta, the Siskiyou County Sheriff�s Department reported. OSF has set up a relief fund at U.S. Bank in Ashland for Wieken and his wife, Christine Williams, an OSF actor. Donations should be made out to the David W. Wieken Fund. Wieken is a seven-season veteran at OSF. This season, he is stage manager for "Force of Nature" and "Henry V." Williams, in her fifth season at OSF, plays Charlotte in "The Night of the Iguana" this season. She also holds smaller parts in "Twelfth Night" and "The Trojan Women." Williams is with her husband in Redding. Understudies are covering Williams�s and Wieken�s positions at the festival, OSF officials said. Wieken fell just before dawn Sept. 23 while climbing the Hotlum/Bolum route on Mount Shasta�s northeast side. Shasta Mountain Guides, leading another group up the mountain, reported the accident to police using a cellular telephone after crossing paths with Wieken�s climbing partner just after the accident. Wieken was lifted from the mountain by a California Highway Patrol helicopter, then transported to Mercy Medical Center in a second helicopter. Hospital officials have declined to release details about Wieken�s injuries and condition. "It�s really a watch-and-wait situation," OSF Media Relations Manager Amy Richard said Friday.
