Tornado sweeps away Bend BEND - A late start to the season due to rainouts didn't hamper the North Medford baseball team as the Black Tornado swept a non-conference doubleheader from Bend, 10-2 and 7-2. North (2-0) posted 22 hits and 63 fielding opportunities without an error in earning its first two wins of the 2002 campaign. Brent Kircher and Evan McArthur each went the distance in their respective games, with Kircher allowing six hits with three strikeouts and McArthur striking out seven to go with three hits. Rob Folsom laced his first homer of the season in the opener to give North a 3-0 lead. Folsom, McArthur, Beau Hovland and J.C. Rowley each went 2-for-4 in Game 1, with Hovland driving in three runs and Tyler Engle adding two RBIs. In Game 2, Hovland and Engle both had two hits and two RBIs, with Dustin Butler and Folsom each adding two hits. The Tornado next take the field Saturday in a doubleheader at Mountain View. GRANTS PASS 1, DEL NORTE 0, 9 innings - At Grants Pass, senior Matt Rettke smacked a single to drive in senior Speedy Ortiz for the winning - and only - run in the bottom of the ninth inning. Rettke, who had started the game as the Cavemen's pitcher before moving to first base, ripped his game-wining hit with one out. Ortiz, who caught all nine innings, had reached on a walk to lead off the inning. Grants Pass (1-0 overall) managed just two hits but kept Del Norte to the same total and no runs. The Cavemen, who committed no errors, got four innings of one-hit pitching from Rettke and five innings of one-hit ball from junior Matt Davidson (1-0). The Warriors received a standout starting performance from senior left-hander Ryan Pepiot, who threw eight innings and gave up just one hit while striking out 10. Grants Pass next faces Hidden Valley on Friday night at 7 p.m. at the Grants Pass Sports Park. Softball CHURCHILL 1, ASHLAND 0 - At Ashland, Churchill's Jessica Steigleman drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs in the top of the sixth inning to force home the game's lone run at North Mountain Park. Darci Whitford, who had bunted for a base hit earlier in the inning, scored on Steigleman's walk. Rachel Steigleman pitched a shutout for the Lancers, allowing just three hits while striking out three and walking none. The Grizzlies, who fell to 2-3 overall, were unable to take advantage of a solid pitching performance from junior Megan Beugli (2-2). Beugli struck out six and walked two in pitching a complete game. Ashland's best chance to score came in the bottom of the sixth. Junior Hanna Elliot laced a single and junior Jenna Graven reached on an error, but Beugli's two-out line drive went straight to a Churchill fielder.
