Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted May. 19, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted May. 19, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News May 19, 1915 CANTON PARDONED WITHOUT NOTICE TO COURT OFFICIALS Governor Withycombe has granted a pardon to attorney W.J. Canton of Medford, convicted of a crime against nature, whose appeal to the supreme court was recently lost. The governor's action was most surprising to the officers of the circuit court, in which the conviction was obtained. Neither Judge Calkins nor District Attorney Kelly had made any recommendation to the governor or pardon board, and the Oregon law requires the governor to first procure the statement of the trial judge or prosecuting attorney before issuing a pardon. Both these officers deny the service of any notice to the effect that an application for a pardon had been filed or was under consideration. WOMEN SEEK APPOINTMENT OF POLICE MATRON Headed by Prosecutor E.E. Kelly as spokesman, a delegation of women appealed to the city council at the regular meeting Tuesday night for the appointment of a police matron. No definite action was taken, it being the council's opinion that the acceptance or rejection of the plan should be left to the voters, and it will probably be placed upon the ballot at the next regular city election. In the meantime the matter will rest. A flurry ruffled the meeting when one of the visiting women made the allegation "that profanity was so thick in the neighborhood of Chief Hittson's home that several families had been forced to move." The allegation was squelched, Judge Kelly characterized the accusation as "slander." Mayor Emerick said that he had known Chief Hittson for years and never heard him swear, and all members of the council said that though at times the stress was great, they had never heard an unprintable word pass the chief's lips. Councilman Medynski expressed surprise that a police matron was necessary, and laid the blame upon parents and churches. The appointment of a police matron is full of pitfalls, legal and financial, according to Mayor Emerick. Her salary would be $70 per month. This would mean warrants drawn on the sinking fund.
