Cascade duo land first-team nod Edwards, Roberts pace 2A list By DON HUNT There was no need for Bryan Edwards to show his peers that he deserved to be selected to the Class 2A all-state baseball team. But Edwards showed them just the same. The Cascade Christian High pitcher fired a four-hit shutout with 12 strikeouts and added a two-run homer to lead the East squad to a 14-0 victory over the West last weekend at the 2A All-Star Series. (The West handily won the other two games). On Tuesday, Edwards joined Challengers teammate Nolan Roberts on the Class 2A/1A all-state first team that was voted on by the state's coaches and appeared in the Oregonian. "He had a terrific season," Cascade Christian coach John Bruce said of Edwards. "He was dominant." Edwards, a 6-foot-2, 220-pound right-hander, posted a 13-1 record, a 0.75 ERA and had 124 strikeouts and just 12 walks in 124 innings of work for the Challengers, who advanced to the state quarterfinals. Edwards is headed to Western Baptist College in Salem. Roberts, a catcher, made first team for the second year in a row. He batted .525 and led Cascade Christian with 39 RBIs in 26 games, but it was his defense that stood out the most. "He's got a terrific arm and he's among the best I've seen at blocking the plate," Bruce said. Cascade Christian's Chad Harvey and Blake McCormick were named to the 2A third team. Meanwhile, infielder Travis Dunlap of Phoenix and first baseman Troy Beard of Hidden Valley were selected to the 3A first team. Dunlap batted .522 and hit 10 home runs for the Pirates, and finished his high school career with a school-record 33 homers. Roseburg shortstop Ole Sheldon was the only member of the Southern Oregon Conference to be named to the 4A first team. Ashland pitcher Mike Allen and Crater outfielder Ken Strate were chosen to the second team, while North Medford outfielder Phil Ouellette, Roseburg infielder Kellen Walker and Grants Pass utility man Brady Howe were named to the third team. At the 3A level, pitchers Scott Hyde of Hidden Valley and Brad Bailey of Henley were selected to the second team while Hidden Valley outfielder Nick Mason, Hidden Valley utility man Rob Adler and Henley infielder Brian Kinsman were chosen to the third team.
