Medford Fire-Rescue crews responded to the blaze at 320 Hamilton St. at 9:16 a.m. The first crews to arrive spotted smoke drifting from one side of the building. "(Crews) were able to look in through the front door, and the fire was confined essentially to a living-room area right around a couch," said Medford Fire-Rescue Deputy Chief Justin Bates. Five engines responded to the scene, and firefighters temporarily closed off a portion of Hamilton Street. They had the fire knocked down in about nine minutes, Bates said. A family of four living there was not home at the time, and no firefighters were injured. The fire started near a space heater, but fire investigators haven't confirmed a cause. "It could have definitely been something else," Bates said. The blaze caused heavy smoke damage throughout one half of the duplex, with some flame-related damage in the living room area. The other side of the duplex received minor smoke damage. A cost estimate was not available. The American Red Cross is working to secure temporary accommodations for the displaced family.
