Rhodes lifts Phoenix PHOENIX With a victory virtually in the bag through three quarters, the Phoenix boys basketball team almost forgot to show up for the final eight minutes. The Pirates let an 11-point lead slip away but Landon Rhodes bailed them out with a game-winning 3-pointer with four seconds left, giving Phoenix a 47-45 Skyline Conference victory over Mazama on Tuesday. Before Rhodes shot, Phoenix (9-7, 3-3) was outscored 12-0 in the quarter. "I think we were playing not to lose," said Phoenix coach Tom Murphy of his teams fourth-quarter performance. "We got really conservative, missed some easy shots and just couldnt get the ball in the hole." The Vikings grabbed a 45-44 lead with two minutes remaining and played keep away for the final few possessions. Mazama missed the front end of a one-and-one situation, however, giving Phoenix the ball with 22 seconds remaining. The Pirates worked the clock down before Rhodes drained the game-winner from the right side. "He (Rhodes) had a fairly good look, considering it was the final shot of the game," said Murphy. "We miss that one and they outscore us 12-0. We didnt want that." The Pirates led 23-21 at the half but used a 21-12 surge in the third quarter to obtain some breathing room. Rhodes scored eight of his game-high 14 points while Kevin Jeffers added six of his 12 in the quarter. Brady Rhodes added seven boards and five points in his first varsity start. "To Mazamas credit, they became much more active in the fourth," said Murphy of the Vikings comeback. "They are a playoff-caliber team and if we think we are going to sneak into the playoffs, then we really needed this one."
